Hey there Earthlings, Alternatives and Trollers. Put down that mouse and lend an ear. Welcome to The Bandersnatch blog where we talk weird, wacky and wondrous. I'm Mama Ogre and I have no idea what I'm doing.

Random blog day boo yah. As you should know Fridays is random blog day were we talk anything and everything and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on the Comic Brand Marvel Comics.

Marvel comics started out in 1939 as Timely Comics releasing the beginnings of The Human Torch and Captain America, by 1951 had become known as Atlas Comics where a lot of the children and teen humour titles were published. Marvel officially became Marvel in 1961 and following rival company DC's revival of super hero's followed suit with the fantastic four (Nov' 1961). This was in a sense a revolution because the Fantastic Four broke convention with the usual archetypes of squabbling, holding both deep and petty grudges and taking hold of celebrity status rather than anonymity. It was during the sixties and the height of the cold war that had the creators at Marvel revise the superhero conventions of previous eras mainly to better reflect the psychology of the age. Comic book tropes like secret identities and costumes were eschewed and the real world approach such as having characters bicker and complain represented a change which proved very much successful.

In 1968 Company founder Goodwin revised the distribution which ended up allowing him to release as may titles and warranted demand. Later that year he sold Marvel Comics and its parental company Magazine Management to Perfect Film and Chemical Corporation with Goodwin remaining as publisher, Goodwin ended his distribution deal in 1969 with independent by signing with the Curtis Circulation Company. During the seventies a lot of changes happened including changes in president several times (Goodwin to Chip Goodwin to Stan Lee with Jim Shooter coming in in1978), popular creator taking work with DC, companies changing names and due to the decline of The News-stand distribution network Marvels distribution was affected.

1975 Marvel ventured into audio with a radio series narrated by Stan Lee (The series was fantastic four) and hosted its own Comic Book convection MarvelCon with a promised return in 1976. in October 1976 a superhero called Captain Britain was created specifically for the UK, during this time a Number of Syndicated comic strips were launched (Specifically; The Amazing Spider-man, Howard the Duck, Conan the Barbarian and the Incredible Hulk) however none of the strips lasted past 1982 bar The Amazing Spider-man which is still in production. When Jim Shooter became editor-in-chief in 1978, He cured several of the procedural ills such as the repeatedly missed deadlines despite being a controversial personality. Thanks to Shooter being in charge, Chris Clairmont and John Byrne's run on the Uncanny X-men and Frank Miller's run on Daredevil became critical and commercial successes. In 1986 during the 25th anniversary cerebrations the ultimately unsuccessful New Universe line was launched and Star Comics a children-orientated line (which differed majorly from the regular marvel titles) was also briefly successful during this period.

During the early 1990's Marvel earned a great deal of money thanks to the comic book boom
of the time, launching the successful 2099 line of comics set in the future and the daringly creative but unsuccessful Razor line. From 1990 Marvel had also started selling Marvel universe cards with trading card maker Skybox International. The company did suffer a blow in 1992 when several of its prised artists left to create Image comics in a deal with Malibu comics owner Scott Mitchell Rosenberg....however Malibu comics was sold to Marvel by November 3rd 1994.

During the late 1990's Toy Biz bought Marvel entertainment group to end the bankruptcy and formed a new corporation, Marvel Enterprises. Toy Biz Co-owner Isaac Perlmutter helped stabilise the comics line with the help of business partner Avi Arad, Publisher Bill Jemas and editor-in-chief Bob Harras. With the new millennium Marvel Comics emerged from bankruptcy and began to diversify its offerings again. With the creation of its own ratings system (with X-force #119-October 2001 being the first to not have the code) Marvel started creating and releasing new imprint such as MAX (an explicit content line) and Marvel Adventures (Aimed at children). Several characters became successful franchises in this time with the Men In Black series (1997-), Blade Movie series (1998-) X-men series (2000-2006) and Spiderman (2002-) which ended up being the highest grossing series of the time.

In 2008 Marvel studios released Iron man the first Movie in the first phase of the MCU timeline via Paramount Pictures, The Incredible hulk (2008) distributed via Universal Pictures, Iron man 2 (2010), Captain America the First Avenger (2011) and the Avengers (2012) completed Phase One (These movies were also distributed via Paramount Pictures).

Phase Two started with Iron Man 3(2013) and included Thor the dark world (2013), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) and ended with Ant-Man (2015).

Phase three included Captain America: Civil war (2016), Doctor Strange (2016), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 (2017), Spider-man: Homecoming (2017), Thor: Ragnarök (2017), Black Panther (2018), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018), Captain Marvel (2019), Avengers: Endgame (2019) and finished with Spider-man far from home (2019). these three phases are collectively known as “The Infinity Saga”.

Phase four starts after august 2019 with Black widow (release 2020) and the Eternals (also release 2020) already being filmed with Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings (2021), Doctor Strange in the multiverse of Madness (2021) and Thor: Love and Thunder (2021) in pre-production. Five announced TV series for the direct to consumer Disney+ streaming service make up the rest of Phase four.

My favourite characters from the Marvel Universe are Hank “Beast” McCoy from The Uncanny X-men, Captain Marvel from the Captain Marvel Comics/Film.....I appreciate the Carol Denver's run to be honest, Iron man from both the Ironman and Avengers Comics/movies and Nick Fury from the Avengers Comics/movies.....you have to admit having both Kelsey Grammer and Nicholas Holt as Hank “Beast” McCoy, Brie Larson as Carol Denvers/Vers/Captain Marvel, Samuel L. Jackson as Director Fury and Robert Downey Junior as Tony Stark/Ironman are totally the right choices. The movies I like are Captain Marvel, Thor, and the Avengers, and I'm looking forwards to the new Black Widow movie, whilst Black Widow/Natasha Romonoff isn't on my list of favourite characters I appreciate her for who she is and what she went through to become a hero.

I've dipped in and out of reading comics since i was a teenager and whilst not an avid collector, i can appreciate having/owning several copies of your favourite characters comic to hand makes you feel good.
