Random
blog day boo yah. As you should know Fridays is random blog day were

blog is on the much beloved company Disney.
WALT
DISNEY COMPANY
The Walt
Disney company commonly known as Disney is an American diversified
multinational multi-media entertainment conglomerate with its
Headquarters at the Walt Disney studios complex in Burbank
California. The company was formed on October 16th 1923 by
Walt and Roy Disney but often operated as the Disney Brothers cartoon
Studio, the Walt Disney Studio and Walt Disney Productions before
permanently and officially changing its name to the Walt Disney
Company in 1986.
Disney
evolved over the years and grew to include Walt Disney pictures, Walt
Disney Animation studios, Pixar, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, 20th
century fox, Fox 2000 pictures, Fox searchlight pictures and Blue sky
pictures. When Walt Disney died in 1966 his brother Roy took over as
Chairman and President of the company renaming Disney park as Walt
Disney World in memory of his brother who brought so much joy to
others. Roy died on December 20th 1971 due to a stroke
leaving the Walt Disney Company under the control of Donn Tatum, Card
Walker and Walt's son-in-law Ron Miller each of whom were trained by
Walt and Roy personally.
Disney was
and always has been a huge part of my life. As a child it was the
various movies and TV shows I watched and which kept me fully
absorbed in fantasy and engaged with the TV screen, fuelling both my
imagination and creativity at the same time. These same movies and TV
shows still have a hold as an adult alongside the shops, the parks
and whole plethora of other things including the cruise ships and
conspiracy theories. Disney has kept a special place in my heart. One
of my (surprisingly) few dreams is to experience every Disney related
park and cruise at least once in my life and own every Disney movie
and Disney related items(I.E. Books, plates, cups etc). I know it's a
strange dream to have but It's one I'll take with me to the grave
even if I don't actually bring it to light. Either way it's a dream I
happily have.
WALT
DISNEY
Born
Walter Elias Disney
on December 5th
1901, the fourth son to Elias and Flora Disney. Walt grew up with his
brothers and sister, moving to Marceline Missouri when he was four
years old. Walt spent his spare time drawing having been paid to draw
the horse of a retired Doctor in their neighbourhood, Walt developed
his drawing by drawing the front page of his fathers Appeal to reason
newspaper. Disney also developed a love of trains when the family
lived near the Atchinson, Topeka and Santa Fe railway lines. In 1911
the Disney's moved to Kansas City, Missouri were Walt and his brother
Roy would get up at half four every morning to deliver the Times
during this time Walt attended Saturday courses at the Kansas City
Art Institute and took a correspondence course in Cartooning. In
1917, Elias bought stock in a Chicago jelly producer, the O-Zell
Company, and moved back to the city with his family.
Disney was enrolled in the McKinley high school and became the
cartoonist fro the school newspaper. In 1918 Walt forged his birth
certificate and joined the red cross during WW1 where he was an
ambulance driver. Walt drew cartoons on the side of his ambulance for
decoration and had some of his work published in the army newspaper
Stars and Stripes. In 1919 Walt returned to the US and began work as
an apprentice artist at the Pesman-Rubin Commercial art studio.
During
the 1920's Walt started working on laugh-o-grams after being laid off
from Pesman-Rubin and experimented at home between the cut-out method
and cel animation. During this time Walt and Roy formed the Disney
Brothers Company (eventually the Walt Disney Company) and created the
Alice in wonderland series which were a combination of live action
and cartoons. The Alice series was distributed by Margaret Winkler
and eventually her husband Charles Mintz. Thanks to their strained
relationship Walt moved on to creating Oswald the lucky rabbit which
was lost on 1928 due to Walt declining Charles Mintz ultimatum of
producing Oswald for less. In 1925 Walt married ink artist Lillian
Bounds and they went on to have two Daughters Diane (1933) and Sharon
(who was adopted in 1936) both girls were kept out of the press and
the limelight as much as possible partially due to the Lindbergh
Kidnapping.
From
1929 onwards Disney along with Iwerks form Rudolf Ising and Iwerks
created Mickey Mouse (Originally Mortimer Mouse), who stared in
several cartoon shorts including The Jazz singer and Steamboat
Willie. Walt himself provided Mickeys voice until 1947 with one of
his workers stating “Ub designed Mickeys physical appearance Walt
gave him his soul”. These shorts led to the series Silly Symphonies
which became Technicolor after Disney studios signed with Columbia
Pictures. By the 1950's Walt was more interested in other ideas and
movies such as the first live action movies (Robin Hood and his
merrie men -1952 and Treasure Island – 1950) one such idea was
Disneyland which first opened on July 18th
1955 with a press day on July 17th
The park opened to 28,000 people attending even though half of those
held counterfeit tickets. The Park continued to develop over the
years both in size and ride/show quality as well as gaining and
creating other parks around the world. To this day there are twelve
Disney parks across the world.
Walt
Disney died on December 15th 1966 after being diagnosed
with Lung Cancer in November of that year. Disney had been a smoker
since WW1, never used filtered cigarettes and had at one point used a
pipe so it wasn't surprising he contracted lung cancer. Disney was
cremated two days later and his ashes were interred at the Forest
Lawn Memorial park at Glendale, California.
My opinion
of Walt Disney is that he was both a genius of his time and ahead of
his time, his creativity is legendary and not only being a hard
worker but expected all of his workers to work hard and to the best
of their abilities as well. I must admit that Walt Disney is one of
my “Muses”/ creative Gods/inspiration whatever you wish to call
it. I do hold him in high regard despite the fact we would have very
explosive conversations if we were to ever have crossed paths.
