Hey there
Earthlings, Alternatives and Trollers. Put down that mouse and lend
an ear. Welcome to The Bandersnatch blog where we talk weird, wacky
and wondrous. I'm Mama Ogre and I have no idea what I'm doing.
Random
blog day boo yah. As you should know Fridays is random blog day were
we talk anything and everything and pretty much run with it. Today's
blog is on The London Eye.
The London
Eye is a cantilevered observation wheel situated on the River
Thames's notorious south bank opposite the Houses of Parliament and
Big Ben. The Eye sits beside Jubilee Gardens in between Westminster
Bridge and Hungerford Bridge besides County Hall and is considered
the most popular paid tourist attraction in the UK. The eye has also
made appearances in popular TV shows and culture.
The eye
was commissioned by husband and wife team Julia Barfield and David
Marks of Marks Barfield Architects and was based on the Great wheel
built for the Empire of India Exhibition at Earls Court (from 1895 to
1907), the eye was constructed by floating sections up the Thames on
barges and assembled lying flat before being pulled up in stages and
set down in its current position today. The Eye was formally opened
by previous Prime Minister Tony Blair on December 31st
1999, but it took until the 9th of march 2000 to open to
the public due to some technical difficulties with a capsule clutch
problem. The Eye held a temporary five-year lease before being
granted a permanent lease in 2002. over the course of the years the
London Eye has been tied to and run by various companies such as
Coca-cola, Ba and Merlin attractions (current runner).
I've been
to the London Eye at various times over the years in various weather,
different times of day, when it's busy and when it's not busy. I have
to say I quite like going on it. Its not too jerky and can be pretty
nice however since its a popular attraction it can be to noisy and
crowded. My favourite time of day to go is at twilight when the
London nightlife is slowly kicking in and at noon on really bright
sunny days where you can see for miles in any direction. It can be a
great experience for youngsters, especially if your teaching them
about recognising landmarks.
I highly,
highly recommend the London eye to everyone of all ages especially
families and photographers of all skill levels (Use the Hashtag
#Banderfanpics to share your pictures with us and each other if/when
you go). I give the London Eye an 8/10 (purely for it being too
crowded on nice days).
