Hey
there Earthlings, Alternatives and Trollers. Put down that mouse and
lend an ear. Welcome to The Bandersnatch blog where we talk weird,
wacky and wondrous. I'm Mama Ogre and I have no idea what I'm doing.
Random
blog day boo yah. As you should know Fridays is random blog day were
we talk anything and everything and pretty much run with it. Today's
blog is on TV Personality and Comedienne Ellen DeGeneres.
Ellen
was born January 26th 1958 to Christian scientist parents
Elizabeth Jane (Nee Porter) and Elliot Everett DeGeneres and as a
younger sister to Vance DeGeneres. In 1973 her parents divorced and
her mother married a salesman named Roy Gruessendorf. Ellen went to
love with their mother whilst her older brother Vance lived with
their father. At 15/16 Ellen went through what no one should go
through she was molested by her stepfather and it stuck with her,
however Ellen pushed on and went through high schooling years at
Grace King High school ion Metairie Louisiana before heading back to
New Orleans for university. Ellen lasted one semester before leaving
school to work, many of Ellen's early jobs included work at J C
Penny's and TGI Fridays.
Ellen
started performing comedy at stand-up comedy clubs and coffee houses,
by 1981 she'd become the EmCee at Clyde's Comedy Club in New Orleans
and started touring around the country. By 1984 she'd been named as
showtimes funniest person in America. In 2018 Ellen returned to
comedy with her new stand-up show Relatable shown on Netflix for the
first time in 15 years.
Ellen's
first TV role was in Fox's short lived sitcom Open House where she
played the role of Margo Van Meter an office worker at the Juan
Verde Real Estate company. The show co-0starred Alison LePlaca and
Mary Page Keller. Ellen went onto play the role of nurse Nancy
MacIntyre in the series Laurie Hill which was cancelled after four
episodes. Ellen impressed the creators Neal Marlens and Carol Black
enough to be cast in the ABC Pilot These Friends of Mine which was
co-created by David S. Rosenthal. These friends of mine was based on
Ellen's comedy Career and was eventually renamed Ellen. It was vastly
popular and was often quoted as the female Seinfeld.
Ellen wax cancelled in 1998 however due to Ellen publicly coming out
as gay and her character coming out as gay at the same time in the
episode entitled “The Puppy Episode”. The episode was one of the
highest rated episodes of the show and whilst Ellen returned for S5
it was cancelled, It was believed that The Walt Disney Company ABC's
parental company had become uncomfortable at the time due to Ellen
being openly Gay (which openly sucks).
Ellen
returned to Comedy and continued to work hard in 2001 Ellen returned
tot he screen with The Ellen show, which unfortunately was cancelled
after 13 episodes. Ellen wasn't deterred however and in September
2003 Ellen returned again to the screen with the TV talk show The
Ellen DeGeneres show
The
program combines comedy, celebrity, musical guests, and
human-interest stories. The program often features audience
participation games where prizes are awarded. During her twelve days
of Giveaways promotion, audience members receive roughly $3,00 worth
of prises on each of the twelve episodes. Because the show has become
so popular, not all who arrive hoping to see a taping can fit into
the studio, so an offshoot space, dubbed by Tom Hanks “The Riff
Raff Room”, was created. Persons seated here are often referenced
and shown briefly on camera but watch the taping from off-stage.
Other non-celebrities have been featured in an attempt by DeGeneres
to give them 15 mins of fame. Guests in this role have included
intelligent children small business owners, etc. in the shows third
season. DeGeneres began surprising fans by introducing them to their
favourite celebrities.

The
show hit its 1000th show in 2009 due to its popularity and
in December 2015 Ellen was surprised by Jennifer Aniston and Justin
Timberlake returning for the 2000th episode. In 2003 Ellen
voiced a little regal blue tang fish with short-term memory loss
named Dory in Finding Nemo and its 2016 squeal Finding Dory. Ellen
has hosted several award shows including the Emmy awards twice,
firstly in 2001 which was after the 9/11 attacks and was cancelled
twice due to the concern of lavish ceremony would appear insensitive
and secondly in 2005 three weeks after hurricane katrina, she also
hosted the 79th academy awards in 2006 and the 86th
academy awards in 2014.
Ellen
met Portia De Rossi in 2004 and they began dating, eventually
marrying in 2008 after same sex marriage was legalised in California
at the time. Despite the passage of proposition 8 -a badly thought
out decision- they remain legally married -which is great-. In 2010
De Rossi filed a petition to change her name legally to Portia Le
James DeGeneres, the petition was granted in September of the same
year.
Animal rights and
Veganism
Ellen previously
described herself as a vegan and “big animal lover”. DE Rossi,
too, is a vegan Ellen co-ordinated a vegan outreach website titled
“Going Vegan with Ellen”. She intended to open a vegan tapas bar,
Bokado in Los Angeles, but plans fell through.
The site for The
Ellen DeGeneres show contains a section called “Going Vegan With
Ellen”, in which she promotes “Meatless Mondays” and features
vegan recipes. She has several times invited organisation's efforts
in animal protection legislation. In 2009, PETA named her their
“Woman of the year”. In April 2013, she donated $25,00 to stop
Ag-Gag anti-whistleblower legislation in Tennessee, which would
prohibit undercover investigators from recording footage of animal
abuse on farms. In 2019 DeGeneres served as a campaign ambassador to
farm Sanctuary's Adopt-A-Turkey in 2010. asking people to start “a
new tradition by adopting a turkey instead of eating one” at
Thanksgiving.
Humanitarianism
In November 2011,
Secretary of State Hilary Clinton named her a special envoy for
Global AIDS Awareness. On December 3rd, 2011, DeGeneres
opened the show at the David Lynch Foundation's 3rd annual
“Change Begins Within” gala at the Los Angeles County Museum of
Art to raise funds to bring Transcendental meditation to at-risk
populations suffering from epidemic levels of chronic stress and
stress-related disorders. She says: “TM is the only time I have
that stillness...it gives me this peaceful feeling, and I love it so
much. I can't say enough good things about it. All the benefits that
you could achieve from sitting still and going within-it really is a
beautiful experience. David Lynch is such a wonderful man to start
this foundation to help people”.
In November 2017 it
was announced that president trump would begin allowing the
importation of elephant trophies from Africa, DeGeneres an animal
activist created a hashtag campaign in partnership with her brand ED
Ellen DeGeneres, to donate to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.
DeGeneres also created a T-shirt with her brand whose proceeds also
go tot he organisation.
In January 2018, for
Ellen's 60th birthday, Ellen's wife, Portia De Rossi,
gifted Ellen a permanent gorilla home in Rwanda built in her namesake
for the digit fund this gift was part of a new arm of the digit fund
now called “The Ellen DeGeneres Wildlife Fund”.
I
LOVE Ellen with everything I have, She's such an awesome and wonderful person as well as
smart, kind and a talented and funny comedienne. I love watching her
show every weekday, however due to living in the UK we're often up to
a week behind with the episodes and there are times especially if I
watch too much Ellen, I burn myself out and have to take a break from
watching the show. I hope that one day I will fly out to the US and
attend a taping of the Ellen show and eventually meet Ellen herself.
