Hey there Earthlings, Alternatives and Trollers. Put down that mouse and lend an ear. Welcome to The Bandersnatch blog where we talk weird, wacky and wondrous. I'm Mama Ogre and I have no idea what I'm doing.

Today's Nerd News is on Movies: DOROTHY & ALICE and THE TURNING, TV Shows: PICARD and Books: High Fire by Eoin Colfer and When we were Vikings by Andrew David MacDonald.

Today we're going to start in the realm of BOOKS:

High fire
by Eoin Colfer

Fans of the “Artemis Fowl” Series when they were younger have a new, adult novel to read by Eoin Colfer. This wild book follows a dragon called Vern whose glory days are over. Now, he spends his time “Lighting Marlboros with nose sparks, swilling Absolut in a Flashdance T-shirt and binging Netflix in a fishing shack.” That is, until a 15-year0old on the run from a crooked sheriff stumbles into his life. Read more about it on Goodreads, and grab a copy on Amazon. Expected release date: Jan. 28th.

I never really had time to read or understand the Artemis Fowl books when I was younger but I do respect Eoin Colfer's genius for writing books. Plus this book does sound rather exciting. I will definitely be buying this book and reading it when I have the time.

When we were Vikings
By Andrew David MacDonald.

Zelda is a 21-year-old with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and is a Viking Enthusiast. When she discovers her brother, Gert, has resorted to some shady dealings to keep them both afloat, Zelda launches her own quest that will require all her Viking strength and test her heroism and love for her brother. Read more about it on Goodreads, and grab a copy on Amazon. Expected Release date: Jan. 28th.

When it comes to the world of books, It's rare I fall out of the Fantasy tree into another Genre and actually want the book I land on but When we were Vikings came across my screen I was interested once I'd read the synopsis. I will be buying this book when I have the money to buy it.

Now its time to swing by the MOVIES:

DOROTHY and ALICE:

ALICE IN WONDERLAND and THE WIZARD OF OZ are both public domain properties and Netflix are bringing together the two main characters from those separate worlds to create a new and unique story.
The film project is called DOROTHY & ALICE, and the crossover will see the two characters team up for a “fantasy adventure epic.” the story follows Dorothy who is sent to a home for girls after experiencing terrible nightmares, and it's at this home she meets Alice.

According to Collider, Netflix has hired Anna Klassen to write the script, which was previously worked on by Justin Merz (Disney's Rose Red). She confirmed that news on twitter saying, “The Cheshire cat is out of the bag. I'm writing DOROTHY AND ALICE for Netflix, a fantasy adventure epic. I grew up reading these books and this project has been endlessly fun to craft- to reinvent treasured characters and explore the worlds I wanted to inhabit as a kid. ”

Hearing about this being in Netflix's pipeline really got my fantasy nodes tingling. I love the fact that both The Wizard of OZ and Alice In Wonderland would be in the same screen time. It could be fantastic. Dorothy and Alice is still in its pre-production stages and is yet to have release dates.

THE TURNING

I don't go in that part of the house.....” universal has debuted an official trailer for a horror movie titled THE TURNING, the latest from Italian director Floria Sigismondi (The Runaways). This creepy new the-kids-are-not-alright thriller is a modern take on henry James' novella “The turn of the Screw”. A young Governess, Kate, is hired by a man who has become responsible for his young nephew and niece after the deaths of their parents. But not everything is as it seems. Starring Mackenzie Davis, with Finn Wolfhard, Brooklynn Prince, Mark Huberman, Barbera Martin, Nail Greig Fulton, Kim Adis, Denna Thomsen and Karen Egan. This is a seriously unsettling trailer, with some wickedly disturbing shots- mainly involving spiders. Which freaks me the hell out and makes this a very scary trailer to watch at night. Tread carefully.

Both the synopsis and trailer of this movie are thoroughly thrilling and properly spooky. The movie will be released worldwide on January 24th 2020.

It's now time for the TV SHOWS:

PICARD:

The Series is set 18 years after Jean-Luc Picard's last appearance in Star Trek: Nemesis (2002), and finds him deeply affected by the death of Data as depicted in Nemesis, as well as the destruction of Romulus as referenced in the film Star Trek (2009).

The Picard series was released earlier this week on Thursday 23rd of January on Amazon Prime.

I have to admit that like Everyone and their mother, I have been waiting for a series like this since forever. The show has taken nearly two years to come to our screens since being announced in June 2018 as part of the expansion fronted by Star Trek Discovery Show runner Alex Kurtzman. I am watching the show and WILL be releasing a episode by episode review after the series concludes.

THE LAST LEG:

The last Leg is a comedy talk show hosted by comedians Adam Hills Josh Widdicombe and Alex Brooker. The show is currently in its 19th season as of this blogs posting (26/01/2020) and has already had two episodes shown the past two Fridays (17/01/2020 and 24/01/2020) on Chanel 4 at 10pm. The show originally started as an after show to the 2012 Paralympics and has since become its own stand alone show with a hilarious return to the 2016 Paralympics.

The Last Leg has become a regular staple in our house and is regularly watched either on a Friday night as the show is airing or Saturday afternoon as a recording with everyone together. I find the humour of Hills, Widdicombe and Brooker to be refreshing and hilarious. I Highley recommend watching the show every Friday.
