Book blog
day boo yah. As you should know Tuesdays is book blog day were we
talk anything and everything and pretty much run with it. Today's
blog is on The Devil wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger.
The Devil
wears Prada is the story of Andrea Sachs, a recent English Degree
graduate of Brown University who moves to NYC with her best friend
Lily a grad student at Columbia. Andrea hopes to find a career in
publishing and blankets the city with her CV. Andrea believes that if
she gets a job in the magazine industry she'll be one step closer to
her dream of working for The New Yorker. She gets a surprise
interview for Elias-Clarke and ends up hired as a junior assistant
for Runway E-I-C Miranda Priestly. People tell her she can have a
choice of jobs in the magazine industry if she manages to work for
Miranda for a year. As she evolves in her job her relationships
outside of it starts to deteriorate. Matters finally come to ahead
when Emily the senior assistant gets Mononucleosis (Glandular fever)
and Andy is taken to Paris instead. In Paris Andy is asked what she
wants to do by Miranda who tells her she'll place a few calls once
Andy's year is up and even suggests she write a few pieces for
runway. Andrea receives a phone call stating her best friend Lily is
in a coma due to a drunk driving accident followed by a phone call by
Miranda for a ridiculous request. Andrea realises her friends and
family are more important than her job and after refusing Miranda's
request is publicly fired before telling Miranda “Fuck you Miranda,
Fuck you”. Andrea returns home and works on her relationships
whilst writing short fiction and plans for her future.
The Devil
wears Prada was released on October 6th 2003 by Broadway
books. The book attracted initial attention because of the writer
Lauren Weisberger's work history with Vogue editor Anna Wintour as
her personal assistant. Weisberger has stated in publicity materials
that the antagonist Miranda Priestley's demands are a combination of
partial fiction and experiences she and her friends had in their
first jobs. The book spent six months on the New York Times
bestseller list whilst the Reviews were rather mixed (though more
good than bad) with a few reviewers citing Wintour as influence for
Miranda. The book spawned a sequel Revenge wears Prada: Return of the
Devil in 2013 inspired the release of the Movie of the same name in
2006 as of 2017 It was officially announced By Kevin McCollum that a
musical version of the Devil wears Prada (A mix of book and film)
will be produced. Sir Elton John was announced as composer and Paul
Rudnick would write both lyrics and Book (story). The cast and
production still has to be announce but is aimed to play on Broadway.
I didn't
read the book until a few years after I'd seen the movie and as such
It took me a bit of time to acclimate the book Andrea to the movie
Andrea that I knew. However the book is reasonably better in my
opinion because there were so many more details about the world of
runway and what Andy had to do even though the movie holds my heart.
Weisberger
was born as the eldest daughter to a school teacher mother and
mortgage broker father. Weisberger grew up in conservative Judaism
later reform Judaism due to her family being of Jewish decent. She
spent her early childhood in Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania but moved to
Allentown Pennsylvania with her mother and sister Dana after her
parent's divorce at 11. Weisberger attended Parkland high getting
involved in sports, extra projects and Organisations she graduated in
1995. after gradating from Cornell University in Ithaca New York in
1999 where she was an English major Weisberger travelled around
Europe and Asia before returning to New York and being hired to work
as an Assistant To Vogue E-I-C Anna Wintour for ten months.
Weisberger started working for Departures magazine where she wrote
100 word reviews and became an assistant editor, she also published a
2004 article in Playboy Magazine. Weisberger eventually expressed
interest in writing classes and was referred to Charles Salzburg, she
started writing the Devil wears Prada around the same time and showed
the finished works to Agents at others urging. It was sold within two
weeks.
I think
Weisberger hit the nail on the head in writing a book close to her
experience as an assistant to Vogue editor Anna Wintour. Whilst I
believe the book is 90% fiction with how harsh and somewhat cruel
Miranda, Emily and the clothing world at large could be I also
believe Weisberger filled the remaining 10% with some anecdotes of
what happened in her job. Whilst The Devil wears Prada and revenge
wears Prada are what Weisberger is best known for in the literary
world I believe she's still pretty good as a writer and could go far
with other written works.
The movie
was released on June 22nd 2006 at the LA Film festival by
20th Century Fox then released to cinemas on June 30th.
Pre-Production and principal filming happened late in 2005 with Meryl
Streep, Anne Hathaway, Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt being hired as
Miranda Priestly, Andrea Sachs, Nigel Kipling and Senior assistant
Emily Chalton respectively. The film received positive reviews from
critics with Streep getting high praise and nominations during award
season. Blunt also drew favourable reviews and nominations for her
own performance. The film grossed $300 million worldwide and was the
12th highest grossing film in 2006. Many of the fashion
designers worried about putting their clothes and accessories in the
film but many allowed them to be used in the film making it one of
the expensively costumed films in history.
As I've
said earlier in this blog I did see the movie before reading the book
and as such it definitely holds my heart, Streep as the goddess she
is epitomises the perfectionist boss and looks fabulous(as usual),
Tucci is a great actor and is absolutely fabulous as Nigel, Blunt is
great as Emily her consistent line of “I love my job, I love my
job” indicating the stress levels of an assistant was a great
touch and Hathaway as Andrea is near perfect and is great as the eyes
in on the world of Runway.
