HAPPY VALENTINES DAY

I hope you are sharing the day with the person you love no matter who you are or wherever you are.
As you should know Fridays is Funday blog day were we talk anything and everything and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on St Valentine and Valentine's Day.

Valentine's Day, also called Saint Valentines day or the Feast of Saint Valentine is celebrated annually on February 14th. Originating as a western Christian feast day honouring one or two early saints named Valentinus, Valentines day is recognised as a significant cultural, religious and commercial celebration of romance and romantic love in many regions around the world.

There are numerous martyrdom stories associated with various valentines connected to February 14th, including a written account of Saint Valentine of Rome's imprisonment for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians persecuted under the Roman empire. According to legend, saint valentine restored sight to the blind daughter of his judge and he wrote her a letter signed your valentine as a farewell before his execution. The feast of saint valentine was established by Pope Gelasius 1st In AD 496 to be celebrated on February 14th in honour of the Christian martyr Saint Valentine of Rome who had died on that date in AD 294.

There are many versions of how Valentines day came about and who its Patron saint was due to the fact there was many Valentine's who were martyred for various things however the most common Valentine accepted was St Valentine from the 3rd century.

Saint Valentine was a widely recognised 3rd century Roman saint, commemorated in Christianity on February 14th, from the high middle ages his saints day has also been associated with the tradition of courtly love. He is also a patron saint of epilepsy.

Saint Valentine was a clergyman -Either a Priest or a Bishop- in the Roman Empire who ministered to persecuted Christians. He was martyred and his body buried at a Christian cemetery on the via Flaminia close to the ponte milivo to the north of Rome, on February 14th, which has been observed as the feast of St Valentine(St Valentines day) since 496 AD.

St Valentine shouldn't be confused with Valentinus (Also spelled Valentinius; c.AD100 – c.160) Valentinus was best known and (for a time) the most successful early Christian gnostic theologian. Valentinus was a candidate for being a bishop of Rome but stated his own group/school when he wasn't chosen.

I don't know how common knowledge it is to how Valentines day started and for who because of how Valentines day is nowadays. Valentines day has definitely become very commercialised over the past few years. Whilst many celebrate it not everyone has the financial means and as such has some people use arts and crafts to show their love. Although if you tell your partner you love them everyday and do little acts of love everyday Valentines Day can get a little redundant.

Since the 19th century, handwritten notes have given way to mass-produced greeting cards. In the UK just under half of the population spend money on their valentines and around £1.9 billion was spent in 2015 on cards, flowers chocolates and gifts. The mid-19th century Valentines day trade was a harbinger of further commercialized holidays in the U. S. to follow.
