I hope you are sharing the day with the person you love no matter who you are or wherever you are.
As you should know Fridays is Funday blog day were we talk anything and everything and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on Peter Pan Syndrome.

Peter Pan syndrome is an inability to grow up or to engage in behaviour usually associated with adulthood. The term comes form the fictional children's character peter pan, who never ages. While it is more commonly attributed to men, it can affect women ad well.
- Peter Pan syndrome Wiki

The concept of the Peter Pan Syndrome gained popularity of Dr. Dan Kiley (Psychoanalyst) in his book The Peter Pan Syndrome; Men Who Have Never Grown Up (First published in 1983). the book became an international bestseller and led to a wave of copy-cat pop-psychology books. Dr Kiley got the idea for “The Peter Pan Syndrome” from J. M. Barrie's play, due to teenagers he treated when they were younger had grown up unable to accept adult responsibility and growing up. This trouble they experience continues on into adult hood.

People who exhibit the characteristics associated with The Peter Pan Syndrome are occasionally referred to as Peter Panners. Professor Humbelina Robles Ortega, professor of Personality, Evaluation and psychological treatment at Universidad de Granada, says the syndrome is linked with overprotective parents and a large lack of life skills which create anxiety in adulthood.

The Syndrome is not currently considered a psychopathology, given the World Health Organisation has not recognised it as a psychological disorder. However, an increasingly large number of adults are presenting emotionally immature behaviours in Western society. They are unable to grow up and take on adult responsibilities, and even dress up and enjoy themselves as teenagers when they are over 30 years old.

EXAMPLES OF PETER PAN SYNDROME:

An example of the syndrome was used Island, Aldous Huxley's 1962 novel. In which one of the characters talks about male Dangerous delinquents and power-loving trouble makers who are Peter Pans. These types of males were Boys who can't read, won't learn, don't get on with anyone and finally turn to the more violent forms of delinquency. Aldous Huxley uses Adolf Hitler as this phenomenons archetype.

A Peter Pan if ever there was one. Hopeless at school. Incapable of competing or co-operating. Envying all the normally successful boys—and, because he envied, hating them and, to make himself feel better, despising them as inferior beings. Then came the time for puberty. But Adolf was sexually backward. Other boys made advancement to girls, and the girls responded. Adolf was too shy, too uncertain of his manhood. And all the time incapable of steady work, at home only in the compensatory of other world of his fancy. There, at the very least, he was Michelangelo, here unfortunately, he couldn't draw. His only gifts were hatred, low cunning, a set of indefatigable vocal cords and a talent for non-stop talking at deaths and heaven knows how many billions of dollars-- that was the price the world had to pay for little Adolf's retarded maturation.
-Aldous Huxley, Island(Huxley Novel).

Another rather prominent example was the Singer Michael Jackson who has been known to say I am Peter Pan at heart. Jackson named his property in California Neverland ranch (after the island where Peter Pan lives) and filling it with numerous statues of children a petting zoo, a movie theatre and a private theme park. He said it was a way of reclaiming his childhood (having been a performer since childhood with his family). On Jacksons Dime thousands of schoolchildren both local and international visited over the years in 2003 a teacher stated to USA Today Neverland smells like cinnamon rolls, vanilla and candy and sounds like children's laughter.

Dr Kiley having coined 'the Peter Pan Syndrome' in 1983 also used the term Wendy Syndrome to describe women who act like mothers with both their partners and people close to Them. Professor Robles Ortega does stress that Wendy is the woman behind Peter Pan. There must be someone who deals with the things Peter Pan doesn't deal do in order for Peter Pan to exist.

The researcher form the UGR states that Wendy Makes every decision for her partner and takes on the responsibilities for her partner, thus justifying his unreliability. We can find Wendy people even within the immediate family: the overprotecting mothers.

It is declared that he biggest disadvantage of both disorders (Peter Pan and Wendy syndromes) is that those who suffer from them don't feel as thought hey are part of the problem and are not aware of it. Robles points out that the only solution for this disease is the right psychological treatment both for those specifically afflicted but their families and partners too.

A Longitudinal study ( a type of observational study that involves repeated observations of the same variables, can be structured as Longitudinal randomized experiments) having been published in 2010 of Navajo adolescent mothers intimate partner relationships identified several reoccurring themes; limited support, substance abuse domestic violence and infidelity. One participant identified several men she'd been with as having Peter Pan syndrome stating They don't want to grow up, they drink to much, they don't work, and they're just not emotionally available.

To me Peter Pan syndrome is a very weird thing to me. It's obviously not a recognised illness but I do feel that even though a lot of symptoms can be attributed to other illnesses/syndromes and several disorders. I do however believe that peter pan syndrome has some merit as an illness all its own, especially for all of those who are said to have it.
