Thorpe
Park was once an Estate which was turned into a Gravel pit in the
1930's which was originally owned by Ready Mixed Concrete Limited. In
the 1970's RMC Flooded part of the site and created a water leisure
and exhibition park opening to the public in 1979. The Theme Park
aspect was developed a few years later with several of the now well
known attractions opening throughout the 1980's and 1990's. “X; No
Way Out” was opened in 1996 and was both the last and the largest
attraction opened by the original owners. The Tussauds group bought
the park and from 2000 opened several more attractions such as Tidal
wave(2000), Colossus (2002), Nemesis Inferno (2003) and Stealth
(2006). Whilst the park is targeted to teens and young adults it was
decided by Merlin to make the park more family friendly via the hotel
and the installation of Angry Birds Land.
The
ownership of Thorpe Park has passed through several owners from 2007
such as Blackstone group who merged Thorpe park into Merlin
Entertainments then Thorpe park specifically was bought by private
investor Nick Leslau and his investment firm Prestbury under a sale
and leaseback agreement. Whilst they no longer own the Park, Merlin
still runs the park and will do so based on a renewable 35 year
lease.
On
February 20th
of 2019 The official Twitter account of Thorpe Park announced that
Loggers Leap, which had been a popular ride since its inception in
1989 and had been closed since 2015, was officially and permanently
closed. A year later on February 25th
of 2020 (As of this post 27/03/2020) A new Live Attraction called
Black Mirror Labyrinth was announced and is to be opened on March
27th
2020.
Thorpe
park has its own hotel on site called Thorpe Shark Hotel, the hotel
is compromised of 90 rooms converted from shipping containers and is
linked to the facilities at the adjacent Dome. The hotel originally
opened up in 2013 as The Crash Pad and run by an external company
called Snoozebox. The park bought the hotel and rebranded it by 2014.
Fright
Nights formerly known as Fright Nites has been Thorpe park's annual
Halloween event since 2002, Its also the UK's largest Halloween
event. The park stays open until 10pm and operates several temporary
Horror/Halloween related attractions as well as several of the normal
rides. Fright Nights relaunched in 2013 with a three year deal with
Lionsgate which made way for several new attractions taking place of
several removed ones. The shark hotel was included in Fright Nights
when it first opened with scar stories and live actors inducing
terror. In 2017 Fright nights was reinvented again to include a
Walking Dead theme with the addition of two Walking Dead attractions
coinciding with the Season 8 premier. Saw Alive, The Big Top and
Platform 15 remain as attractions from previous years with
Containment as an up charge attraction.
Thorpe
Park has various different ways you can pay to get in, on the Thorpe
Park website itself you can choose between four options: the 1 Day
Ticket, the Overnight Stay with 2 day entry(based on 4 people
sharing), the Season Pass with digital unlimited ride photos, and the
Premium Season Pass (specific to Thorpe park) and Since the park is
run by Merlin attractions there are two ways with Merlin you can pay
for tickets. The Monthly Merlin Membership (both the Standard and the
Premium) or the Merlin Annual Pass (again both Standard and Premium).
The Merlin passes also includes admittance to several other parks
such as Alton Towers, Chessington world of adventures and Legoland
Windsor.
I
have ended up at Thorpe Park at various important points in my
childhood and adult life. I genuinely love the park and love going
despite not being able to ride some of the rides due to my weight. I
highly recommend everyone; families, thrill seekers and general park
lovers to go and enjoy Thorpe Park, I also recommend buying tickets
ahead of time and either pay for Merlin passes or the season tickets
if wanting to go several times over the year.
THORPE
PARK WILL BE OPENED ON FOR THE 2020 SEASON ON THE 27TH OF MARCH 2020.
