Random blog day boo yah. As you should know Fridays is random blog day were we talk anything and everything and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on World Wide Cults.

In Modern English, a cult is a social group that is defined by its unusual religious, spiritual or philosophical beliefs, or by its common interest in particular personality, object or goal. This sense of the term is controversial and it has divergent definitions both in popular culture and academia and it has also been ongoing source of contention among scholars across several fields of study it is usually considered pejorative.

An older sense of the word Cult is a set of religious devotional practices that are conventional within their culture, are related to a particular figure, and are often associated with a particular place. References to the “cult” of a particular catholic saint, or the imperial cult of ancient Rome, for example, use this sense of the word.

PEOPLE'S TEMPLE

The Peoples Temple of the Disciples of Christ, commonly shortened to Peoples Temple, was an American new religious movement founded in 1955 by Jim Jones in Indianapolis, Indiana. Jones used the People's temple to spread a message that combined elements of Christianity with Communist and Socialist Ideology, with an emphasis on racial equality.

The Temple is best known for the events of November 18, 1978, in Guyana, when 909 people died in a mass murder at its remote settlement, named “Jonestown”, as well as the murders of U.S. Congressman Leo Ryan and members of his visiting delegation at the nearby Port Kaituma airstrip. The incident at Jonestown resulted in the greatest single loss of American civilian life in a deliberate act prior to the September 11th terrorist attacks.

It was founded in 1974 and led by co-creators Marshall Applewhite (1931-1997) and Bonnie Nettles (1927-1985). On March 26, 1997, members of the San Diego Country Sheriff's Department discovered the bodies of 39 members of the group in San Diego suburb of Rancho Santa Fe. They had participated in a mass suicide, a coordinated series of ritual suicides, in order to reach what they believed was an extraterrestrial spacecraft following following Comet Hale-Bopp.

The above cults mentioned are three of the most famous across the world, obviously for various reasons. All three started out for benign reasons but ended up in disaster and loss of life proving that cults can be pretty dangerous.
