Hey there Earthlings, Alternatives and Trollers. Put down that mouse and lend an ear. Welcome to The Bandersnatch blog where we talk weird, wacky and wondrous. I'm Mama Ogre and I have no idea what I'm doing.

As you should know Tuesdays is book blog day were we talk about one particular book and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on the book The Greatest Knight by Elizabeth Chadwick.

A Penniless young knight William Marshal is plucked from obscurity when he saves the life of Henry 2nd's Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine. In gratitude, she appoints him tutor in arms to her son. However, being a royal favourite brings its share of conflict and envy. Besmirched by his enemies, banished from court, William seeks redemption in pilgrimages across Europe and the holy land, returning to find bygones forgotten and his prowess on the battlefield in demand. The only knight to ever unhorse the legendary Richard Coeur de lion, William is offered the hand in marriage of Isabelle de Clare, the 18-year-old ward of the king. Strangers to each other on their wedding day, the pair must immediately confront deadly political intrigue. Strained family loyalties and betrayals. As King Richard prepares to depart on Crusade, other men, including the kings own brother john, are waiting for their moment to seize power – it is Williams duty to stand in their path..

The Greatest knight was fist published on November 3rd 2005 and republished by Time Warner in 2006. The Greatest Knight is followed by a secondary book The Scarlet Lion. Both books have brought their author Elizabeth Chadwick international acclaim. The Greatest Knight is based on real life Nobleman William Marshall.

William Marshal also known as William The Marshal -born in either 1146 or 1947- was the first Earl of Pembroke. He was an Anglo-Norman soldier and statesman who served 5 English kings Henry 2nd and his sons Henry the “young king”, Richard 1st, John and Johns son Henry 3rd. Marshal spent a good chunk of his younger years living with relatives in Normandy learning to be a knight which he fully became in 1166. He became de-facto Earl of Pembroke when he married Isabel De Clare through he was granted the position properly during the second creation of the Pembroke Earldom in 1199. In 1216 Marshal was appointed protector and regent for the kingdom, for the then 9 year old king Henry 3rd. Before him, Marshals family held a hereditary title of Marshal to the King, which by the time of his father John Marshal had become a recognised position as a chief or master of Marshalcy which involved management over other marshals and functionaries. Having become known as the marshal the function was delegated to more specialised representatives. Thanks to his title of Earl and being known as the Marshal, the Term Earl Marshal was commonly used and later became an established hereditary title in the English peerage. William Marshal died on May 14th 1219 and is buried in Temple Church London.

In the Shadows and Strongholds blog (05/05/2020) I mentioned my love of history and buying that book on a whim. The Greatest knight was again another whim purchase whilst I browsed through a Waterstones one day, but I then knew how good of a writer Elizabeth Chadwick was and knowing that William Marshal was an extremely well known part of English history has made this book all the more a worthwhile read. I recommend this book to anyone who loves reading especially historical fiction readers and give the book a 9/10.

Elizabeth Chadwick's biography can be found in the book blog on Shadows and Strongholds (05/05/2020) and the link to her website can be found in the bibliography down below.
