Hey there Earthlings, Alternatives and Trollers. Put down that mouse and lend an ear. Welcome to The Bandersnatch blog where we talk weird, wacky and wondrous. I'm Mama Ogre and I have no idea what I'm doing.

As you should know Tuesdays is book blog day were we talk about one particular book and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on the book The Other Boleyn Girl by Phillipa Gregory.

Two Sisters competing for the greatest prise: the love of a king.

When Mary Boleyn comes to court as an innocent girl of fourteen, she catches the eye of Henry 8th. Dazzled, Mary falls in love with both her golden prince and her growing role as unofficial queen. However, she soon realises how much of a pawn in her family's ambitions plots as the king's interest begins to wane and she is forced to step aside for her best friend and rival: her sister, Anne. The Mary knows she must defy her family and her king and take fate into her own hands.

The Other Boleyn Girl was published in 2001 by Scribner (printed in both hardback and paperback), it is followed in print by The Constant Princess and that is followed by The Boleyn Inheritance. The Queen's Fool and The Virgin's Lover books that are set in the reigns of Queen Mary 1st and Queen Elizabeth 1st respectively. Reviews of the book are mixed with some saying that the book is a brilliant though claustrophobic look at palace life in Tudor England, whilst others are troubled by the lack of historical accuracy. However since then the book has enjoyed both popularity and phenomenal success since its publication, prompting the rise of two movies based on the book (2003 and 2008 respectively). The Other Boleyn Girl has gone onto being entered in the 2002 Romantic Novel of the Year Award (RoNa's) and the Goodreads Choice Award Nominee for fiction in 2009. The Other Boleyn Girl was the first book outside of school I bought specifically for myself since I have a love of History and a love of Historical Fiction (As previously mentioned). There has been some issues with the historical accuracy of the book which, whilst I agree with it. I don't think it deters from the book's ultimate charm. I highly recommend the book to all those who love reading and give the book an 8/10.

Author Phillipa Gregory was born on January 9th 1954 in Nairobi, Kenya the second daughter of Elaine and Arthur Gregory. The family moved to Bristol, England when Gregory was two years old. Gregory obtained her education up to A-0levels at Colston's Girl's school where she was considered a “Rebel”, Gregory went onto journalism college in Cardiff before spending a year as an apprentice at the Portsmouth newspaper and gaining a place at the University of Sussex in an English literature degree (this was changed to a history degree later on). Gregory worked with BBC radio for two years before heading to the University of Edinburgh to earn a doctorate in 18th century literature. During this time Gregory wrote her first novel Wideacre (published in 1987). Gregory has taught at both the university of Durham and the University of Teesside as well as the open university and in 1994 was made a fellow of Kingston University whilst writing several popular novels as well as children's books on the side, she also has a pen name, that of Kate Wedd.

Phillipa Gregory has been married three times (twice divorced), she has two children of her own and four stepchildren and currently lives in North Yorkshire, England. Gregory also has her own website the link is in the bibliography down below.

The 2003 movie of the same name was a BBC TV film adaption and was included as an extra to the DVD release of The Six Wives of Henry 8th on March 28th 2003. The movie was low budget (£750,000) and was shot at Berkley Castle using modern techniques that are not normally used of historical dramas. Some scenes were even shot in a confessional straight to camera video diary style. The script wasnt a complete word for word rendition of the book and was improvised somewhat by the cast and the director. The difference in the filming of the 2003 movie to the 2008 movie made me feel a little weird about it after watching. However its style couldn't put off how well it captured the essence of the book. The actors were well chosen and did well in my opinion. I recommend it to all lovers of the book and give the movie a 7/10.

The 2008 adaption of The Other Boleyn Girl being of high production had much press coverage before its theatre release on February 29th 2008. The movie came out on both DVD and Blu-Ray with a collection of deleted and extended scenes as well as an audio commentary from Director Justin Chadwick. Like the 2003 adaption the 2008 adaption did not follow the book 100% but retained enough of the books essence to do well. The movie received mixed reviews and a 42% on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite the changes in the movie to the book (Like most Movie adaptions of books in general) the movie did double its budget in worldwide earnings. I recommend watching the film if your both a lover of the book or a movie lover in general and give the movie an 8/10.
