Hey there Earthlings, Alternatives and Trollers. Put down that mouse and lend an ear. Welcome to The Bandersnatch blog where we talk weird, wacky and wondrous. I'm Mama Ogre and I have no idea what I'm doing.

Random blog day boo yah. As you should know Fridays is random blog day were we talk anything and everything and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on the Whitby Goth Weekends.

The Whitby Goth Weekend (WGW) is a twice yearly festival held in the town of Whitby on the North Yorkshire coast. The festival also incorporates the Bizarre Bazaar Alternative Market which tends to hold over 100 indoor stalls every weekend. The town was picked due to its connections to Bram Stokers Dracula. The weekend came about in 1994 thanks to Jo Hampshire and a pen friend meet up at the Elsinore Pub the WGW has grown over the past 20+ years to be one of the worlds premier goth events. Over the course of the past several years WGW has supported several charities including the Bat Conservation Trust, The Sophie Lancaster Foundation (a blog will be posted about this charity on 29/05/2020), The DEBRA Charity and others.

In 2012 I managed to attend the October event thanks to the help of my grandmother and a great-aunt. I was meant to go with an ex but we separated up to a week or two before the event, my grandmother and great aunt came with me so I didn't have to travel up there alone and had someone I knew there with me. I stayed for most of the weekend but left the morning of the regular football game that happens between the local football team and a team of goths. It has been the only weekend I was able to go to, monetary issues deterring me from returning to another weekend BUT I am hoping to attend another weekend at some point in the next few years.

Due to the Covid-19 outbreak WGW April 2020 was cancelled. They held a Virtual Bazaar over the dates, so any vendors attending the events could still sell wares to customers. Until told otherwise the October 2020 dates are still possible. For more information on the weekends, both the WGW website and social media pages are down in the bibliography.
