Hey there Earthlings, Alternatives and Trollers. Put down that mouse and lend an ear. Welcome to The Bandersnatch blog where we talk weird, wacky and wondrous. I'm Mama Ogre and I have no idea what I'm doing.

Random blog day boo yah. As you should know Fridays is random blog day were we talk anything and everything and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on The Sandman.

The Sandman is a traditional character in numerous children's stories and books. In Scandinavian folklore, He is said to sprinkle sand or dust on or into the eyes at night to bring on sleep and dreams. The Grit or “Sleep” (Rheum - the naturally thin mucus that usually discharges from the eyes, nose and mouth) in one's eyes upon waking up is the supposed result of The Sandman's previous nights work.

In 1816 German writer E. T. A. Hoffmann wrote a short story titled Der Sandmann, which was a more sinister take on the character. According to the antagonists nurse, he threw sand in the eyes of children who wouldn't sleep, with that result Der Sandmann would take out take out their eyes, take them to the moon and feed them to his children. The protagonist of the story ties this nightmarish creature to Coppelius, the sinister looking associate of his father.

In 1841 Hans Christian Anderson's (author of the little mermaid) folk tale Ole Lukoje introduced the sandman by relaying dreams he gave to a young boy in a week through his magical technique of sprinkling dust into the eyes of children. Ole is a common Danish name whilst Lukoje is Danish for close eye, In Norway and Sweden the sandman is called John or Jon Blund and in Dutch and Afrikaans (a south African language associated/related to Dutch) he's refereed to as Klass Vaak.

The Sandman has transcended the Fairy tales of which was written about him, prompting several songs being made by bands such as Lordi, Metallica and SYML. The Sandman has also been made into a comic series under DC comics. The Original series ran from January 1989 to March 1996. various film and TV adaptions have been unsuccessful since the 1990's, with Sandman Comic writer Nail Gaiman stating “He'd rather no Sandman movie made than a bad Sandman movie” however as of June 2019 an adaption is in development for Netflix.
