Hey there Earthlings, Alternatives and Trollers. Put down that mouse and lend an ear. Welcome to The Bandersnatch blog where we talk weird, wacky and wondrous. I'm Mama Ogre and I have no idea what I'm doing.
As you should know Tuesdays is book blog day were we talk about one particular book and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on the book Holes by Louis Sachar.
Stanley Yelnats is under a curse. A curse that began with his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather and has since followed generations of Yelnats. Now Stanley has been unjustly sent to a boys' detention centre, Camp Green lake, where the warden makes the boys “build character” by spending all day digging holes: five feet wide and five feet deep. It doesn't take long for Stanley to realise there's more than character improvement going on at Camp Green Lake. The boys are digging holes because the warden is looking for something. Stanley tries to dig up the truth in this inventive and darkly humerus tale of crime and punishment—and redemption.

Holes was published in 1998 by Farrar, Straus and Giroux in the US and by Bloomsbury in the UK. The book won the 1998 US National Book Award for young peoples literature, the 1999 Newbury Medal for the year's “Most Distinguished contribution to American literature for children” and in 2001 it won the William Allen White Children's Book Award. Holes continues to be a popular book with both readers and critics and in 2012 was ranked number 6 all-time children's school novels
I came across Holes in secondary school, it was one of the curriculum books we had to read it as part of our English GCSE alongside Lord of the Flies. Since this is a very good book, I ended up buying my own copy and reading it several times over outside of school. I highly recommend it for children 9-10 and up and personally give the book an 8/10.
Louis Sachar born on the 20th of march 1954 in East Meadow, New York. After graduating high school Sanchar ended up graduating in 1976 with an economics degree from the University of California, Berkley, after attending a semester at Antioch College. He began working on Sideway stories from Wayside school which took nine months to write and was released in 1978, despite the book not being widely distributed and not selling well Sachar started gaining fans. After heading back into education and graduating from UC Hastings college of law in 1980 Sachar continued to write books whilst working part-time in the law field. By 1989 his books were earning enough for Sachar to write full-time.
Holes became a movie in 2003 thanks to the walk Disney company. The cast includes Sigourney Weaver, Patricia Arquette and Shia LeBeouf and went on to gross in $71.4 million the box office and garner a 78% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Holes went onto be released on September 23rd 2003 on VHS and DVD by Buena Vista Home Entertainment and Walt Disney Home entertainment. I highly recommend the film to all of those who read the book and those with children and teenagers. If you want to watch it now there is a link in the biography to the full Holes movie on YouTube.
