Hey there Earthlings, Alternatives and Trollers. Put down that mouse and lend an ear. Welcome to The Bandersnatch blog where we talk weird, wacky and wondrous. I'm Mama Ogre and I have no idea what I'm doing.

Random blog day boo yah. As you should know Fridays is random blog day were we talk anything and everything and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is Cosplay and Cosplayers.

Cosplay is a portmanteau of the words Costume Play, It is a performance art in which the participants known as Cosplayers who wear Costumes and Accessories to represent a specific Character. Cosplayers often interact with each other to create a subculture and Cosplay has a broader term which applies to any costume Role-playing with several entities being lent to interpretation. Many sources for cosplay comes from Anime, Manga, Computer Games, TV Shows, Movies and Comics. Cosplay also has a historical foot in events like Masquerade Balls which were a feature of the Carnival season in the 15th century, Royal Balls or pageants usually celebrated at the court of Kings and Queens, And Costume/Fancy dress Parties which were popular from the 19th century onwards.

Cosplay has been most popular at Conventions Either Comic Cons like LFCC or MGM or for specific events Like Star-trek Conventions. There are numerous different conventions across the world that people go to and dress up for. There are specific Cosplay-Con's like Cosplay Manga in the Philippines and EOY Cosplay Festival in Singapore. Cosplay is a very open world with many participants dressing up as their most favourite charecters including those of Cross-play, such as a female dressing up as Hercules or a Male dressing up as Tinkerbell. However there has been issues due to this, with cosplayers being subjected to Discrimination, Homophobic comments and being touched without permission.

With all the hate that comes into the world of Cosplay the “Cosplay is Not Consent” Movement which started in 2013 by Rochelle Keyhan, Erin Filson and Anna Kegler has brought to the mainstream the issue of Sexual harassment suffered from both Male and Female Cosplayers attending conventions. From 2014 several conventions like New York Comic-Con placed large signs at entrances stating that “Cosplay is not Consent” with Attendees being asked to ask permission for photos and respect the persons right to say No. the Movement has continued to gain momentum and awareness since being publicized with the mainstream media reporting on the subject bringing it to those outside the community.

As Cosplay has entered more mainstream media, ethnicity of charecters and those who cosplay them has become a somewhat controversial point. Cosplayers of a different colour to their character of choice have often been ridiculed for not being accurate or faithful. It becomes a very complicated grey area when Cosplayers aren't respectful of the charecters ethnicity, with issues like Brown, Yellow and Black Face being controversial talking points all their own. Ethnicity remains a polarizing topic in the world of Cosplay today with the discussion continues both online and in person.
