Hey there Earthlings, Alternatives and Trollers. Put down that mouse and lend an ear. Welcome to The Bandersnatch blog where we talk weird, wacky and wondrous. I'm Mama Ogre and I have no idea what I'm doing.

As you should know Tuesdays is book blog day were we talk about one particular book and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren.

Tommy and his sister Annika have a new neighbour, and her name is Pippi Longstocking. She has crazy red pigtails, no parents to tell her what to do, a horse that lives on her porch, and a flair for the outrageous that seems to lead to one adventure after another!

- Pippi Longstocking Goodreads

Pippi Longstocking was written by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren and after some rejections including Bonnier Publishers in 1944, however the book went onto be accepted and published by Raben and Sjogren in 1945 followed by two more books in the next three years, there have also been three short stories and several picture book adaptions. As of 2018 there have been 76 translations of the book as well as several films and TV series.

I have read Pippi Longstocking several times over the years in various forms and even though I love the book, I've always found the story geared more towards children than adults and believe the book should be read to young children or read by children in primary school. As such I recommend the book to families and primary school children and I give the book a 6/10.

In 1988 The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking hit theatres, premiering on March 8th in Tokyo, on July 15th in North America and had a national release on July 29th. The Movie grossed $933,462 on opening weekend, grossing not only $3.6 million but becoming the 136th highest grossing film of 1988 in North America alone. The movie didn't receive the best of reviews garnering a 17% on Rotten Tomatoes, several reviewers gave mixed reviews some praising the actors or the screenplay and visual effects and others being overly critical. I've only seen a few scenes of this movie and as such I can only rate the movie off those scenes, as such I give the movie a 5/10, its a good movie but doesn't catch your imagination, I do however recommend it to families for a little bit of nostalgia.

The Pippi Longstocking animation opened theatrically on 22nd of august 1997 in 73 venues across the US. The film reached 23rd in the box office having earned $62,196 its opening weekend. The movie earnings expanded almost nine-fold by the time it closed on October 30th 1997 having grossed an amazing $505,335. despite the good run with money the movie received Mixed reviews reaching a 43% on Rotten Tomatoes. With one reviewer citing the movie has a goldilocks feel to it. As in “It's not to big, its not too small it's just right”. Other reviews despaired of the voice actors acting as well as other parts of the movies construction. I remember this movie a lot more than its 1988 cousin. However I believe the 1988 version is better. I recommend this movie more as a starter into the world of Pippi Longstocking and for families with young children and I give this movie a 5/10.

Author of Pippi Longstocking, Astrid Lindgren was born to parents Samuel and Hanna Ericsson as one of three Daughters and a Son, Lindgren and her siblings grew up in Nas, near Vimmerby, Smaland, Sweden. After finishing school Lindgren took a job with a local newspaper in Vimmerby, having a relationship with the chief editor which resulted in a marriage proposal and a pregnancy. Lindgren had a son, Lars who she left with a Foster Family for a while visiting him often until she could bring him home. In 1932 Lindgren married said chief editor Sture Lindgren who left his wife for her and by 1934 they had their second child a daughter Karin who would later become a translator, Pippi Longstocking was created due to Karin requesting a story whilst ill.

Lindgren worked as both a Journalist and a secretary before becoming a full-time Author. She also served as a secretary for the 1933 Swedish Summer Grand Prix. In the early 1940's Lindgren worked for criminalist Harry Soderman as a secretary: this experience has been cited as the inspiration for her fictional detective character Bill Bergson. In 1941 Lindgren won second prise in a competition held by Raven and Sjogren with the novel Britt-Marie Lattar Sitt Hjarta (Britt-Marie unburdens her heart), Lindgren went onto win first place with Pippi Longstocking a year later, a book which was published by Raben and Sjogren. Lindgren was sent to the US in 1948 by woman's magazine Damernas Varla to write several short essays, which she did creating the book Kati in America which was inspired by the trip, Lindgren is said however to have been most upset with the discrimination prevalent with the black community at the time.

Lindgren received many awards thanks to her writing with the German edition of Mio, min Mio (Mio, my son) received the Children's book award in 1956, Lindgren also won the second Hans Christian Anderson Medal for Rasmus Pa Luffen (Rasmus and the Vagabond) a 1956 novel adaption of her screenplay of the same name filed in 1955. In 1997 on Lindgren's 90th birthday she was pronounced International Swede of the Year. On the 28th of January 2002 Lindgren passed away at the age of 94 in her home on Dalagatan, where she'd moved and lived with her family since 1941. her funeral took place in the Storkyrkan (Great church) in Gamla Stan, Amongst those attending the funeral were the Swedish King Carl XVI and Queen Silvia and members of the royal family as well as the Swedish Prime Minister Goran Persson. Many described the ceremony as the closest you could get to a state funeral.
