Hey there Earthlings, Alternatives and Trollers. Put down that mouse and lend an ear. Welcome to The Bandersnatch blog where we talk weird, wacky and wondrous. I'm Mama Ogre and I have no idea what I'm doing.

As you should know Tuesdays is book blog day were we talk about one particular book and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on the fairytale Sleeping Beauty.

The story of Sleeping Beauty goes like this, a King and Queen is told by a wicked fairy that their daughter will die when she pricks her finger on a particular item, (In Basile's version its a piece of Flax and in Perrault's and the Brothers Grimm's versions its a spindle) the parents rid the kingdom of this item in hopes of protecting their child, but the prophecy is fulfilled regardless however instead of dying the girl falls into a deep sleep. After some time she's found by a travelling prince and awakened. In Basile's version of sleeping beauty of Sun, Moon and Talia, Talia after falling under by receiving a splinter of flax on her finger is discovered by a wandering king who sleeps with her before leaving her behind, Talia gives birth to twins in her sleep and only wakens when one of the babies sucks the flax from her finger. A secondary part to the tale which is often believed to be a separate tale entirely, in which the king returns to the princess and claims both her and their children through marriage. The kings previous lover is not at all happy, and orders the cook to kill and cook the children. The cook doesn't comply and serves an animal instead. The ex-lover feeling emboldened orders the cook to do the same with the princess however she's found out before this is completed and is killed the same way the princess would have been.

There have been several versions of the sleeping beauty fairytale with the main three being The Brothers Grimm's Little Briar Rose in 1812, Charles Perrault's The Sleeping Beauty in 1697 and Giambattista Basile's Sun, Moon and Talia in 1634. There are story variants amongst the main three as well as the others however the main thread of a princess/noble lady falling into a deep slumber after being pricked on the finger is the common factor even if the means on pricking are highly different. Interpretations of the story through modern eyes has put Sleeping Beauty in a harsh light, placing the character of Sleeping Beauty as lacking in interesting qualities. Many critics use the 1952 Walt Disney movie as evidence for this with the title character Aurora asleep for 3/4's of the movie. If Aurora was the only main female character in the movie, I would whole heartedly agree. However including the 1959 movie as well as in several versions the sleeping beauty has been raised by women in a position where women are prevalent, and in the 1959 version the three good fairies Flora Fauna and Merry-weather and Maleficent the evil fairy hold prominent roles as women showing that sleeping beauty isn't the predominant role for women/young girls.

There have been several adaptions of the Sleeping Beauty story including movies like the 1959 Disney movie, book adaptions such as the 2000 release of Spindle's end, TV adaptions such as 2011's Once Upon a Time and music such as the 1902 opera adaption Dornroschen by Englebert Humperdinck, there have been sleeping beauty themes in several video games too.

Despite the interpretation that Sleeping Beauty is Anti-feminist. I Like the story, the main character wither you want to call her Aurora, Briar Rose, Talia is raised in the way girls of their time are with the 1959 version showing Aurora being raised mainly by women to do what women do, which in the time of the story was to raise children and keep a good home, which regardless of the feminist angle is pretty much good skills to have. Sleeping Beauty is a good story to read especially with young children and I definitely recommand reading the three main versions by Basile, Perrault and the Brothers Grimm for a story variety, I give the story overall a 6/10.
