Hey there Earthlings, Alternatives and Trollers. Put down that mouse and lend an ear. Welcome to The Bandersnatch blog where we talk weird, wacky and wondrous. I'm Mama Ogre and I have no idea what I'm doing.

As you should know Tuesdays is book blog day were we talk about one particular book and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on Fire and Blood by G. R. R. Martin.

Centuries before the Events in A Game of Thrones, House Targaryen -the only family of Dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria- took up residence on Dragonstone, Fire and Blood begins their tale with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and goes on to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart.

What really happened in the Dance with Dragons?, Why was it so deadly to visit Valaryia after the Doom?, What were Maegor the Cruel's worst crimes?, What was it like in Westeros when Dragons ruled the skies?, These are but a few questions answered in this essential Chronicle as related by a learned Maester of the Citadel.

- Fire and Blood Blurb

Fire and Blood was published on November 20th 2018 by publishers Bantam Books. The book is part of the Game of Thrones: A song of ice and fire series but considered a stand a lone book in its own right due to the weight of work in its pages of the Targaryen family. The book received mixed reviews with critic Hugo Rifkind of The Times Newspaper described it as “Interminable, Self-indulgent Crap”, Rosin O'Connor of the Independent Newspaper faulted the book for its dry tone stating “You've been assigned a mildly interesting, but often tedious, piece of Homework”, however Dan Jones of The Sunday Times Newspaper praised the book calling it “A Masterpiece of popular historical fiction” in a similar vein Chris Lough of Tor.com described the book as “The best SoIaF book in 18 years”

G.R.R. Martin was born on September 20th 1948 in Bayonne, New Jersey. To parents Raymond Collins Martin and Margaret Brady Martin, he later gained two sisters, Darleen and Janet. Whilst at Marsist High school, Martin became an avid comic book fan, developing a long love for superheroes especially Marvel, he later credited Stan Lee as one of his greatest Literary influences. Martin bought one of the first tickets to the 1964 Comic-Con and in 1965 won the comic fandoms Alley Award for best fan fiction for his prose superhero story Powerman Vs. The Blue Barrier.

Over the '70's and '80's Martin continued writing becoming a full time writer after his friend and fellow author Tom Reamy's death in 1977. By 1991 Martin had written many stories with one of his well known Novels Fevre Dream being published in 1982 followed by The Armageddon Rag in 1983, as well as several TV Pilots and Screenplays, which weren't often picked up. Martin wanting to write an epic and having admired Tolkien in his childhood and being influenced by The Wars of the Roses (the historical war of between the Lancastrians and the Yorkists of the English royal family), The Accursed Kings (a French novel of the 14th century French monarchy) and Ivanhoe (historical novel set in middle ages England) Martin conceptualised A Game of Thrones. Which whilst meaning to be a trilogy became a series the Last two books will be The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring (which have yet to be released).

This is a great side book to the main Game of Thrones series. It gives 100% structure to one of the main Westeros families, the Targaryens, and gives more behind the scenes for the GoT world at large through its detail. I definitely recommend to those who are reading/have read the main series and those who loved the TV show, I personally love the book for its detail and give it an 8/10
