Hey there Earthlings, Alternatives and Trollers. Put down that mouse and lend an ear. Welcome to The Bandersnatch blog where we talk weird, wacky and wondrous. I'm Mama Ogre and I have no idea what I'm doing.

As you should know Tuesdays is book blog day were we talk about one particular book and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on the Book Ugly by Constance Briscoe.

Constance's mother systematically abused her daughter throughout her childhood. Regularly beaten and starved, she tried to get herself taken into care without success and even drank bleach. When she was 13, her mother left her to fend for herself but constance found the courage to survive and this is her story.

  • Ugly Goodreads page

Ugly was first published on the 16th of January 2006 by Hodder with several reprints since then.

I first came across and read Ugly whilst in college, I'd rented it from the college library whilst looking for other books for my college course. I managed to buy the book properly a few years later after finding it in my local Waterstones. Whilst I do believe some things in the book happened I do believe however some of it is highly exaggerated, especially in light of Briscoes later convictions. I do however think its a good book to read and recommend it to everyone in general and give it a 7/10.

Constance Briscoe was born in London England on May 18th 1957 to parents Carmen and George Briscoe. Briscoe decided young she wanted to practice law and as such after attending school in London she went to Newcastle University to study Law, graduating with a 2:2, financing her studies with casual work including hospice work. Briscoe also took an MA at the University of Warrick. Briscoe was called to the bar in 1983 and was one the first black female recorders in England and Wales. In 2006 and 2008 Briscoe wrote her books Ugly and Beyond Ugly detailing her childhood and teenage years. The claims of child abuse made to her from her other and stepfather were denied by her mother Carmen Briscoe-Mitchell, who later on took her daughter to court for libel, However the courts sided with Briscoe. However Briscoe-Mitchell wished for a reversal of this decision due to when Briscoe was taken to court herself for separate criminal convictions in 2014.
