Hey there Earthlings, Alternatives and Trollers. Put down that mouse and lend an ear. Welcome to The Bandersnatch blog where we talk weird, wacky and wondrous. I'm The Bandersnatch and I have no idea what I'm doing.

As you should know Tuesdays is book blog day were we talk about one particular book and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery.

Anne Shirley, an eleven year old orphan has arrived in a verdant corner of Prince Edward Island only to discover the Cuthbert's, Elderly Matthew and his stern sister Marilla want to adopt a boy not a feisty red-headed girl. But before they can send her back, Anne who simply must have more scope for her imagination and a real home-wins them over completely.

  • Anne of Green Gables Goodreads page.

Anne of Green Gables was first published on June 13th 1908 by publishers L.C. Page & Co of Boston US. It quickly became a bestseller, selling 19,000 copies in five months, resulting in over 50 million copies worldwide with translations into 36 languages. In writing the novel, Montgomery was inspired by notes she'd made as a young girl about siblings mistakenly sent an orphan girl rather than the boy they requested. She also drew up on her own childhood experiences in rural Prince Edward Island, Canada. The original Manuscript is preserved at the Confederation Centre of the Arts, Charlottetown Prince Edward Island. A project has been announced by the Centre to publish images of the manuscript online in 2022, a transcript of the manuscript was published by Nimbus Publishing in 2019. Montgomery's original Typescript and corrected proofs are lost.

Due to how popular the books are it generated tourism Prince Edward Island, especially for the Green Gables farmhouse located in Cavendish. Many tourist attractions on the island have been developed based on the fictional Anne. The Province and tourist facilities have often highlighted the local connections to the extremely popular novels and is considered an important part of the Island's economy with many merchants offer items based on the novels.

I quite like Anne of Green Gables for its story that no matter your start in life and what life gives you, you can find your place in it along with friends and aspirations along the way. As a result I give the book a 7/10.

  1. M. Montgomery was born Lucy Maud in Clifton, Prince Edward Island on November 30th, 1874. to Hugh John Montgomery and Clara Woolner Montgomery Nee MacNeil. Due to her mothers death by Tuberculosis when she was 21 months old she was placed with her maternal grandparents Alexander and Lucy MacNeil in the community of Cavendish, Prince Edward Island by her father due to being grief stricken. In 1893 Montgomery attended Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown to obtain a teachers license. She completed the two-year Program in Charlottetown in one year before going onto study Literature at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Upon leaving the Dalhousie, Montgomery worked at various schools on Prince Edward Island whilst writing on the side, from 1897 onwards her writings started being published in Newspapers and magazines, with Montgomery publishing over 100 stories between 1897 and 1907 due to being that prolific a writer. Montgomery married Ewen Macdonald a Presbyterian minister in 1911 shortly after her grandmothers death, however the pair struggled in their marriage despite having three sons (One was stillborn), though Montgomery believed it her duty to make the marriage work, Her writing increased in this time however.

On April 24th 1942, Montgomery was found dead in her bed in her Toronto home, the primary cause recorded was Coronary Thrombosis, however in September 2008 it was revealed by her granddaughter Kate Macdonald Butler that Montgomery suffered from depression no doubt in resulting caring numerous years for Ewen who'd become mentally ill in that time and may have ended her life with a drug overdose.
