Hey there Earthlings, Alternatives and Trollers. Put down that mouse and lend an ear. Welcome to The Bandersnatch blog where we talk weird, wacky and wondrous. I'm The Bandersnatch and I have no idea what I'm doing.

Random blog day boo yah. As you should know Fridays is random blog day were we talk anything and everything and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on Homesteading.

Homesteading is a common term for a lifestyle of self-sufficiency. It is characterized by small scale subsistence agriculture, home preservation of food and the smallscale production and sale of textiles, clothing and craft work for personal use or sale. Use of the term in the US goes back to the 1862 homestead act and in the uk Smallholder and Crofting are rough synonyms of Homesteader. Homesteading was brought about to more public knowledge by the US President Franklin D. Roosevelt's program of subsistence Homesteading during the 1930'2 and 1940's. The potential benefits of homesteading include a satisfying standard of living as well as a healthier and more rewarding lifestyle. Many modern homesteaders use renewable energy (Including Solar and Wind), many others also grow heirloom Vegtables and raise heritage Livestock (Heirloom vegetable is the growing of a specific type of vegetable and Heritage Livestock is the same concept but with pure and rare breeds of animal). Homesteading isnt defined by where they love but by their lifestyle choices.

In homesteading social and government support systems are often pointed in favor of self reliance and relative deprivation, in order to maximine self-determination and independence. The degree of independence often promts homsteaders creating foodstuffs or crafts that appeal to a high end market niche to meet financial ends, other homesteaders come to the lifestyle following successful careers which often provides the funding for land, housing and taxes as well as specialised equipment such as Solar Panels, farm equipment and specialised generators. Nowadays modern Government regulations usually in the form of building and food safety codes plus local council restrictions for land and animal keeping as well as minimum wage and social security for any occasional outside labour does add to the costs of Homesteading. The Careful choice of where your homestead is, is essencial for economic success.

In the UK and across Europe, Homesteading is commonly known as Smallholding or Crofting. With families living a smallscale rural farm lifestyle, living off a combination of Cash Crops and Subsistence farming. There are an estimated 500 Million smallholder farms in developing countries of the world, effectively supporting almost 2 billion people alone. Crofting is considered a traditional social system in specific parts of the UK especially Scotland and more remote rural areas, due to this is often falls under some government rulings and have to follow some legal requirements. With the crofters holding act (Scotland) of 1886 providing security of tenure for crofting tenents and to improve the land under their control. By 1976 Crofters weregiven the right ot purchase their induvidual crofts and by 2003 as part of the Land Reform Act, Crofting community bodies were given right to purchase eligible croft land associated with the local crofting comminity.

I am of the opinion that Homesteading, Smallholding, Crofting whatever you wish to call it is a good thing to do and can be a great thing to do with helping to change the world and climate change. Its also great for self-improvement and health, I personally would love to be a homesteader and when I finally own my on home with a decent garden I'll be a happy owner of a food garden, fruit trees, several chickens and a flower garden.....well thats the plan anyway.

I do have four homesteaders that I LOVE watching on Youtube and all are American, they are: Acre Homestead, Roots and Refuge Farm, Simple Living Alaska and The Holler Homestead.

Acre Homestead:

Acre Homestead is owned by Becky, who not only works in a full time job along with her husband, but maintains a full working garden with various fruits, vegetables, Dogs and Chickens. Becky shows what meals and preperations she does to everything she harvests via her youtube, Instagram and TikTok pages and showcases recipies via her blog page scratchpantry.com, All Links down below. I like Acre Homestead for Beckys bubbly personality and can do attutude, especially with the volume of food her garden produces and the works that goes into preserving everything.

Roots and Refuge Farm:

I love Roots and Refuge Farm purely due to the fact their starting over in a new place and showing what their doing in rebuilding a homestead after moving. I love the way they plan things and having a To-Do list that is flexable and has things on said list be moved up and down said list in order of whats most needed to be done at one time. I also appreciate the fact their Pigs have just had piglets and they've bought a Cow with the intention of having their own milk supply, their youtube link is down below.

Simple Living Alaska

The Illia's who run the channel Simple Living Alaska are awesome, especially sincentheir showing the world how you could sucessfully survive in the wild during various seasonal changes on not a lot and still live well and freely. I appreciate the fact their preserving game is highly on point and that they share what thy do and know via Youtube, Facebook and a website, their links are down below..

The Holler Homestead

I absolutely love and ADORE The Hollers and their youtube channel, just like the othes they keep their videos real and to the point as they share their life on a homestead. I also love the fact their teaching their children how to live simply and work for things on a small farm and to work with each other as well. The fact they share how hard they work together as a family via youtube makes my little chilly heart all aglow, their links are down below.
