Hey there Earthlings, Alternatives and Trollers. Put down that mouse and lend an ear. Welcome to The Bandersnatch blog where we talk weird, wacky and wondrous. I'm The Bandersnatch and I have no idea what I'm doing.

As you should know Tuesdays is book blog day were we talk about one particular book and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on Moby Dick by Herman Melville.

Ishmael travels in December from Manhatten Island toNew Bedford, Massachusetts, with plans to sign up for a whaling voyage. The inn where he arrives is overcrowded, so he must share a bed with the tatooed cannibal Polynesian Queequeg, a harpooneer whose father was king of the fictional island of Rokovoko. The next morning, Ishmael and Queequeg attend Father Mapple's sermon on Jonah, then head for Natucket. Ishmael signs up with the Quaker ship owners Bildad and Peleg for a voyage on their whaler Pequod. Peleg describes Captain Ahab: “He's a grand, ungodly, god-like man” who neverless “Has his humanities”. They hire Queequeg the following morning. A man named elijah prphesies a dire fate should Ishmael and Queequeg join Ahab. While provisions are loaded, shadowy figues board the ship. On a cold christmas day the Pequoad leaves the harbour.

Melville began writing Moby Dick in February 1850, finishing 18 months later which was longer than he expected. E book was first published in three volumes as the Whale in London in October 1851 then released in a single-volume in November. Melivlle stated his literary influences were Shakesphere and the bible. The relistically detailed descriptions of Whale Hunting, the etraction of Whale Oil as well as life aboard ship amongst a culturally diverse crew added to the story. Moby Dicks reputation as Great American Novel was only established in the 20th century after the centennial of the authors birth. Reviewers in Britain were largely favourable however American Reviewers were more hosile, however Authors William Faulkner said he'd wished he'd written the book himself and D. H. Lawrence called it “One of the strangest and most wonderful books it the world” and “the greatest book of the sea ever written”.

I personally don't like Moby dick its one of those books I've truly struggled reading it in its entirity. As such ive not finished reading it and I give it a 3/10.

Herman Melville was born August 1st 1819 in NYC, the third child of a prosperous merchant whose passing left the family in dire straits. Melville took to the sea in 1839 as a comon sailor on a merchant ship then the whaler Acushnet, but jumped ship in the Marquesas Islands. Typee his first book and its sequal omoo were travel-adventures based on his interactions with the people of the island. This success gave him the chance to marry Elizabeth Shaw. Melville would continue to write both books and poetry however it didnt fully support their growing family. Melivlle despite dying on September 28th 1891 from what his death certificate states as “Cardiac dilation” went onto become one of Americas well known writers with Moby Dick being considered one of the Great American Novels. Melivlle is burried in the Woodlawn Cemetary in The Bronx, New York City.
