Hey there Earthlings, Alternatives and Trollers. Put down that mouse and lend an ear. Welcome to The Bandersnatch blog where we talk weird, wacky and wondrous. I'm The Bandersnatch and I have no idea what I'm doing.
Random blog day boo yah. As you should know Fridays is random blog day were we talk anything and everything and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on the subject of Abortion.
Abortion, Quite the controversial conversation topic if I must say so. However with the topic being heavily debated in the US and being a British citizen in the UK where the law on Abortion is still legal thanks to the 1967 Abortion act (Mainly in England, Wales and Scotland with limited access in Northern Island), as such I felt it a chance to share both what an abortion is, what happens and my opinion on it. So lets get on with it.
An Abortion is basically the termination of a pregnancy through the removal/expulsion of a fetus, ie a baby. An abortion without an intervention is often known as a miscarriage and can occur in up to 40% of all pregnancies. This can be devastating in any and all circumstances for ALL of those involved. When deliberate steps are taken to end a pregnancy it can be called both an induced abortion, an induced miscarriage (although less frequently) or just an abortion. In the UK, Abortion is legal thanks to the 1967 Abortion act which legalised Abortions in a medical setting under a doctors care. Whilst there's a gestation limit of just under 24 weeks if fetus is considered healthy, there is no legal limit if the mother or fetus is in serious medical danger. In the US it is legal for women to have abortions thanks to the Roe vs. Wade case of 1973 with each state required to have one abortion clinic, however each state can legally regulate even severely how abortions can be accessed through trigger laws. Eight states (Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Michigan, Mississippi, Oklahoma, West Virginia and Wisconsin to name them) have unenforced Pre Roe abortion bans in their state laws which can be enforced if the Roe case is overturned. Currently Us States cannot place legal restrictions or placing a substantial obstacle in the path of the woman seeking an abortion in accordance of the 1992 case of Planned Parenthood Vs. Casey. Due to several religious churches in the US, Religion has been used to shame women when abortions are considered regardless of how they got pregnant and wither or not they wanted said pregnancy to happen.
In the UK there are two ways to deal with an abortion through a surgical procedure and through a medical abortion (through two series of pills over 24-48 hours). However all abortions start with a consultation with medical professionals through the NHS or Private doctors, where medical information is given. Medical checks are given including bloodwork for illnesses, STI's and the like including an ultrascan. Consent to the procedure is required especially after a consult with therapists to ensure this is something the mother wants the most especially after being given the information. Both options require you to have some rest time afterwards, and would mean you'll have vaginal bleeding for up to two weeks afterwards almost like a severe period. Whilst abortions can be a safe option if done legally and early enough with small risk, some women may go through some complications including infections, excessive bleeding and damage to both the womb and cervix. If this does happen after an abortion it's highly recommended to head to hospital for help. Abortion is not a contraception and shouldn't be considered as such, you can still get pregnant after an abortion and should be using appropriate protection in the process.
In My opinion, Abortion should be a recognised Legal requirement in the medical field and should have no religiously moral ties to it whatsoever, It Shouldn't it be taken flippantly or lightly and it should be considered in a serious context with all the medical information available, especially if the mothers or fetus's life at serious risk (Ie the mother or fetus would be at risk of death or severe illness during the pregnancy or birth due to said pregnancy). I also believe the mother regardless of relationship should have the rights to terminate her pregnancy through an abortion for the reasons that she was raped, she is unable to take care of the child physically or financially or she doesn't want to go through with the pregnancy, however I do believe that said people in the relationship should have a serious talk about it and the mother should be given all the legal information for not only an abortion but the information for alternative choices/options as well as access to councillers/therapists too.
