As you should know Tuesdays is book blog day were we talk about one particular book and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on another two Creepypastas The Rake and The Lost Episode Candle Cove.

WHAT ARE CREEPYPASTAS?

Creepypastas are internet based horror-related legends that are shared around and is a catch all term for most horror content posted on the internet. Such entries are often a brief often user-generated, paranormal stories written with the intent to scare the reader. Often including such gruesome tales of suicide, murder and occurrences considered otherworldly, the subject of the Creepypasta widely varies and can often include the topics of twisted TV Shows and haunted Video Games, as well as the usual Ghosts, Zombies and murder. The length of a Creepypasta varies from a simple paragraph on a blog to a rather lengthy multi-part series that spans multiple media types from blogs to videos and even photographs. The three Creepypastas mentioned below are some of the well known Creepypastas to date.

THE RAKE

As I prepare to take my life, I feel it is necessary to assuage any guilt or pain I have introduced through this act. It is not the fault of anyone other than him. For once I awoke and felt his presence. And once I awoke and saw his form. Once again I awoke and heard his voice, and looked into his eyes. I cannot sleep without fear of what I might next awake to experience. I cannot ever wake. Goodbye.”

A suicide note from 1964 detailing the authors experience with the Rake.

The Rake is the main antagonist of the Creepypasta of the same name. It's often depicted as a humanoid with large teeth and claws that stalk victims, appearing at the end of their beds as they sleep or in nearby woods or even their houses.

Ever since 2006 Pictures Fan-art and video blogs have been made of The Rake, including numerous allusions in the Slenderman universe YouTube series Everyman Hybrid.

The Origin of The Rake was born in late 2005 on 4Chan's /b/board. A thread was started by an anonymous user titled “Hey /b/ lets make a new monster!”. Naturally there were various ideas but one eventually stood out leading to a secondary post quoted “Alright this is for the people who like the three eyes, no apparent mouth pale skin one. Here' s what we got so far: Humanoid, about six feet tall when standing, but usually crouches and walks on all fours. It has very pale skin. The face is blank as in no nose. No mouth. However it has three solid green eyes, one in the middle of its forehead the other two on either side of its head, towards the back. Usually seen in front yards in suburban areas, but will stand up and attack if approached. When it attacks. A mouth opens up as if a hinged skull opens at the chin. Reveals many tiny. But dull teeth.”

This creature went though various designs and name changes in its beginning. One of the prevalent names was Operation Crawler. All of this eventually evolved into what we now know as The Rake Today.

The First and most Well Known story of The Rake was eventually posted to the personal blog of Something Awful user Ben Somerville on July 20th 2006. it was included in a series entitled Horror Theatre but the writer Somerville hasn't indicated if the text was taken form another website or he wrote it specifically for the blog post. According to the Mythos, First hand accounts of The Rake were described as early as the 12th century (Ie: the 1100's) and had been first time documented in 1691.

LOST EPISODE: CANDLE COVE

Written by web cartoonist and author Kris Straub in 2009, Candle Cove is an online Creepypasta that centres on a fictional TV series titled Candle Cove that could only be watched by a small amount of people pedominently children who would later recall the disturbing details they'd seen on a web forum. Straub said he was inspired after reading an article titled “Area 36-year-old still has occasional Lidsville Nightmare” in the satirical news outlet The Onion.

Inspiring numerous YouTube videos and fan fictions as it became Popular, Straub would go onto self-publish Candle Cove in a collection of short stories under the name Candle cove and other stories in 2015 and would a year later be adapted for the first season of Anthology series Channel Zero which was created by and aired on Syfy. Additionally Straub would go onto create a YouTube spin off series called Local 58 which centred around strange broadcasts from the fictitious TV channel where Candle Cove originally aired.

The Verge an American technology website commented that Candle Cove was much different from other Creepypastas due to being created from both a known source and a known author. Most Creepypastas after all usually have an anonymous and folklorist quality to them.
