As you should know Tuesdays is book blog day were we talk about one particular book and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on the book How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr Seuss.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas is a very popular Children's Christmas book that was written in rhymed verse accompanied with illustrations the author Theodor Geisel more commonly known as Dr Seuss, wrote and drew himself. It follows the character of the Grinch a grouchy, solitary creature who tries to cancel Christmas by stealing all of the Christmas decorations, items, Food and gifts from the homes of the who's of Whooville, the nearby town on Christmas eve. Through a strange event miraculously, The Grinch realises that Christmas is not completely about Money and presents.

The Grinch as a character appeared in a 33 line illustrated poem called “The hoobub and the Grinch” which was published in the Redneck Magazine in 1955. “How the Grinch stole Christmas” would be published in the same magazine on October 12th 1957 and would later be published as a book on November 24th 1957 by Random House.

Being an extremely popular book, The Grinch who stole Christmas has many media adaptions including an animated TV special from 1966 including narration and voice work from Boris Karloff, Thurl Ravenscroft singing “You're a mean one Mr Grinch” whose lyrics were written by Dr Seuss Himself. In 2000 a live adaption movie directed by Jon Howard and starring Jim Carey as the Grinch was released which is often the most common Grinch movie adaption mentioned. On November 9th 2018 a new animated movie aired, that directed by Yarrow Cheney and Scott Mosier, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the Grinch, the movie however was supposed to air the year before on November 10th 2017 but had pushed back. The Grinch has also been adapted into a horror Movie whose director is Steven LaMorte and stars David Howard Thornton as the Grinch, the movie will be released in 2022.

Theodor Geisel was born and raised in Springfield, Massachusetts the son of Theodor Robert Geisel and Henrietta Geisel Nee Seuss. Theodor Sr managed the families brewery and was later appointed by mayor John A. Denison to supervise the local public park system after the brewery closed due to Prohibition. Due to being of German decent the Geisel family experienced Anti-German prejudice following the outbreak of WW1 in 1914. Geisel was raised as a Missouri Synod Lutheran and remained part of the denomination his entire life.

Geisel would adopt the name DR Seuss as an undergrad at Dartmouth College and a grad student at Lincoln College, Oxford. He'd go onto being an illustrator and cartoonist at Vanity Fair after leaving Oxford in 1927, he would take a break from children's literature to illustrate political cartoons during WW2 and work in animation and film department for the US department producing Design for Death which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 1947.

Geisel died of Cancer at the age of 81 on September 24th 1991 at his home in the La Jolla community in San Diego, California. Four years later on December 1st 1995, the University of California, San Diego's University Library building was renamed Geisel Library in honour of the author and Audrey (his second wife) for the generous contributions made to the library and for their devotion to improving literacy.
