Hey there Earthlings, Alternatives and Trollers. Put down that mouse and lend an ear. Welcome to The Bandersnatch blog where we talk weird, wacky and wondrous. I'm The Bandersnatch and I have no idea what I'm doing.

As you should know Tuesdays is book blog day were we talk about one particular book and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on Green Eggs and Ham by Dr Seuss.

The Story of Green Eggs and Ham follows Sam-I-Am offering a plate of green coloured food, specifically Eggs and Ham to an unnamed man. Sam-I-Am and the food is rebuffed with the statement “I do not like Green Eggs and Ham, I do not like them, Sam-I-Am” Such a statement prompts Sam to ask him to eat the food in various locations including a box, a tree and a boat, alongside various animals including a mouse, a fox and a goat but still gets rebuffed. Finally Sam-I-Am asks the man to just try them, the plate is taken and once eaten the man declares rather happily “I do like Green Eggs and Ham, Thank You, Thank You, Sam-I-am”

Green Eggs and Ham is a very well known and popular children's book, published on August 12th 1960 under Random House, reaching the eight million mark in copies sold as of 2019. Its considered one of Dr Seuss's “Beginner Books” with both a vocabulary text of fifty words and not exceeding a 236 word count limit as set from The Cat in the Hat text as set in the bet offered to writer Theodor Geisel (Dr Seuss) by his publisher Bennett Cerf. Green Eggs and Ham like many of its fellow works received various adaptions including the 1973 TV show Dr. Seuss on the Loose starring Paul Winchell in both roles and the recent TV Annimation from Netflix which subsequently gave the unnamed character pestered by Sam-I-am, Guy-I-Am.

Theodor Geisel was born and raised in Springfield, Massachusetts the son of Theodor Robert Geisel and Henrietta Geisel Nee Seuss. Theodor Sr managed the families brewery and was later appointed by mayor John A. Denison to supervise the local public park system after the brewery closed due to Prohibition. Due to being of German decent the Geisel family experienced Anti-German prejudice following the outbreak of WW1 in 1914. Geisel was raised as a Missouri Synod Lutheran and remained part of the denomination his entire life.

Geisel would adopt the name DR Seuss as an undergrad at Dartmouth College and a grad student at Lincoln College, Oxford. He'd go onto being an illustrator and cartoonist at Vanity Fair after leaving Oxford in 1927, he would take a break from children's literature to illustrate political cartoons during WW2 and work in animation and film department for the US department producing Design for Death which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 1947.

Geisel died of Cancer at the age of 81 on September 24th1991 at his home in the La Jolla community in San Diego, California. Four years later on December 1st 1995, the University of California, San Diego's University Library building was renamed Geisel Library in honour of the author and Audrey (his second wife) for the generous contributions made to the library and for their devotion to improving literacy.
