Hey there Earthlings, Alternatives and Trollers. Put down that mouse and lend an ear. Welcome to The Bandersnatch blog where we talk weird, wacky and wondrous. I'm The Bandersnatch and I have no idea what I'm doing.

Random blog day boo yah. As you should know Fridays is random blog day were we talk anything and everything and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on The George Hotel, Crawley

The George Hotel, tied to the Ramada hotel Chain, is a hotel situated on the high street of Crawley a West Sussex town which sits roughly halfway between London and Brighton. Once a former coaching inn, The George as its commonly known was once the country's most famous and successful coaching inns, due to the towns location obviously. The George has been cited as “Crawley's most celebrated building” and has gained the status as a Grade 2 listed building.

Crawley wasn't listed in the doomsday book, however the once forested area had been marked as an area for clearing and settling. During the 12th and 13th centuries, Crawley as a village and eventual town began to form from the high street outwards, as a route from London to Shoreham had formed and was often used. The name, The George has been tied to many a building on the site since the 16th century thanks to landowner Richard Covert, who willed the land down to his son after he died around 1579. With the core of the current building said to be dated to 1615. The rest of the main structure is made up of various separate builds of various dates, including an expansion during the 18th and 19th centuries thanks to successful growth alongside some building work during the 1930's.

The George has several notable associations including a small connection to Royalty, due to Mark Lemon, the first editor of the Magazine Punch, an important society figure in Crawley due to being generous with both his time and money and lived on the high street from 1858 until his death in 1870. Lemon organised and paid for festivities at The George Hotel and the nearby White Hart Inn in 1863 to celebrate the wedding of Edward, Prince of Wales and Princess Alexandra of Denmark. The George bares a Blue Plaque (A historical marker usually to honour a person, place or event) commemorating his time in the town.

The second notable association is the George being mentioned in the Mystery Novel Rodney Stone as written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in 1896. The novel's central theme was around the bare knuckle prizefighting that was traditional around Sussex at the time. The story builds up around the narrators friend Boy Jim who arrives at The George to be trained by Jem Belcher who was a real bare knuckle fighter fictionalised as a character in the novel.

The third notable association is that of the serial killer John George Haigh from the 1940's who killed various people via Acid Baths, he often stayed at the hotel and had reportedly dined there on the day he killed one of his victims.

The hotel has a supposed residential Ghost, that of a nightwatchman named Mark Hurston (or Hewton depending on the story version). The story goes that there was a reoccurring thief/intruder operating around the George at night, with guests regularly reporting being robbed. One night a glass of poisoned wine was left out for the thief and the next morning Hurston/Hewton had been found dead and the reports of robberies going dormant almost instantly. Due to Hurston/Hewton's death and the fact the robberies stopped around the same time, the two were tied together and forgotten about. Even if he wasn't the thief, Hurston/Hewton didn't do himself any favours, often falling asleep in cupboards on the job and both eating customers leftover food at night and annoying said customers in the process. Its been reported that a locked boom cupboard has been found open, strange figures have been seen, and the lights regularly get turned on and off.
