Hey there Earthlings, Alternatives and Trollers. Put down that mouse and lend an ear. Welcome to The Bandersnatch blog where we talk weird, wacky and wondrous. I'm The Bandersnatch and I have no idea what I'm doing.

As you should know Tuesdays is book blog day were we talk about one particular book and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on The Guinness World Records Book.

Guinness World Records, known from its 1955 inception until 1999 as the Guinness Book of Records (The Guinness Book of World Records in the US) is a British reference book published annually, listing various world records both by the extremes of the natural world and a series of Human achievements. The first edition topped the 1955 Christmas best-seller list in the UK, as on the 2022 edition its now in its 67th year of print, with books reaching 100 countries in 23 languages. The book also has a database which maintains over 53,000 records within a database.

The international Franchise has extended beyond the books to include a TV series and several museums. The books popularity has resulted in the book becoming the primary source for both the verification and cataloguing of various world records. The Organisation behind the book employs various Adjudicators to ensure the setting, breaking and Authenticity of each record. The current owners are the Jim Pattison Group who took over in 2008 after a series of owners. Current Headquarters are currently in Canary Wharf as of 2017. From 2008, Guinness world Records has orientated its business model towards the invention of new world records as publicity stunts for companies and individuals, which has attracted criticism in this day and age.

On November 10th 1951, Sir Hugh Beaver the, then Managing Director of the Guinness Breweries, had gone on a shooting party in County Wexford, Ireland. After missing a shot at a Golden Plover, he became involved in an argument over which was the fastest game bird in Europe, The Golden Plover or the Red Grouse (Its the Plover). Later that evening at Castlebridge House, Beaver realised it was hard to confirm such a question. Beaver even had the realisation that there must be similar debates amongst many of the public and realised that a book supplying the answers might prove successful. Beaver's idea became reality when an employee, one Christopher Chataway recommended his university friends twins Norris and Ross McWhirter, who were running a fact-finding agency in London. Beaver commissioned the brothers to compile what would become The Guinness Book of (Superlatives and now) Records. By August 1954, A thousand copies were printed and given away.

After the books founding at Ludgate house Fleet Street London. The first 198 page edition was bound in August 1954 and went to the top of the British best seller list by Christmas. The 1956 edition would travel across the ocean and be released in the US by New York Publisher David Boehm selling 70,000 copies. Since then The Guinness world records has sold ore than 10 million copies across 100 countries and in 37 languages.
