  1. Christmas is a Christian festival that happens yearly to celebrate the birth of Jesus. The Catholic church chose December 25th to mark Jesus's birthday.


  1. Not all Christians celebrate Christmas in December, in the countries with Orthodox Christians like Russia, Ukraine and Romania celebrate Christmas on January 7th, Greek Orthodox Christians also celebrate January 7th.


  1. The name Christmas comes from the old English 'Criste masse'


  1. Many of the UK's current festive Christmas traditions such as Christmas cards, Gift Giving and crackers comes from the Victorians.


  1. Christmas trees popularity in Britain comes from the Victorians, but they were first seen in Germany during the 16th century.


  1. Norway sends the UK a 20ft tree every year, which gets set up in Trafalgar Square in London. This is a yearly gift for the UK helping Norway during WW2.


  1. Father Christmas's alternate name Santa Claus comes from “Sinterklaus” which means Saint Nicholas in Dutch. Saint Nicholas was a 4th century Bishop, who would become the patron saint of children.


  1. Santa isn't the only Christmas character, In Italy a kind Witch flies around on a broom delivering presents to good children. Whilst in Iceland, there are 13 mischievous Trolls who leave either Candy or Rotten Potatoes depending on if the children are bad or good.


  1. Jingle Bells was originally written in 1850 for Thanksgiving.


  1. In 1644 Christmas celebrations was banned and made illegal both in England and in the English colonies in the US. People still celebrated in private/secretly until Christmas was made legal again 20 years later.
