As you should know Tuesdays is book blog day were we talk about one particular book and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on The Disc-world Novel: The HogFather by Terry Pratchett.


The HogFather follows the story of an absentee HogFather a magical creature akin to Father Christmas who grants wishes on Hogswatchnight (December 32nd) and brings presents. Whilst Death attempts to fill in with his manservant Albert, his Granddaughter Susan Sto Helit tries to find and rescue the HogFather.


The HogFather was published in 1996 by Victor Gollancz and in 1997 became a British Fantasy award Nominee. HogFather is the 20th Disc-world Novel and one of 15 Terry Pratchett books to make the top 200 books in The Big Read, a BBC Survey of most loved British Books reaching 137th place.


A 2-part TV film version of The HogFather was screened on Sky One in the UK on the 17th and 18th of December 2006 and was released a year later on November 25th 2007 in the US and December 23rd, 24th and 25th 2007 in both Australia and Germany. Ian Richardson was the voice of Death, David Jason played Albert his manservant, Michelle Dockery (Mary Crawley, Downton abbey) played Susan Sto Helit with Marc Warren playing Mr Teatime, Rhodri Meilier playing Bilious and Tony Robinson playing Shopkeeper Vernon Crumley. Sir Terry made a brief cameo as the Toy-maker.


Sir Terence David John Pratchett OBE, born on April 28th 1948, became an English Author, humorist and Satirist. He is best known for his 41 comic fantasy novels set in the fictional Disc-world and being the co author of the apocalyptic comedy novel Good Omens(1990) alongside Neil Gaiman.


Pratchett's first novel The Carpet People was published in 1971, However his first Disc-world novel The Colour of People was published in 1983, resulting in Pratchett's other disc-world books being written and published twice yearly with his last novel, The Shepard's Crown being published in August 2015.....Five months after his passing.


With 100 Million books sold worldwide in 43 Languages, Sir Terry would go onto be knighted in the 2009 New Years Honours for his services to Literature and had received an OBE in 1998 almost ten years earlier. He won the 2001 Carnegie Medal for The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents (the first child orientated disc-world book) and received the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement in 2010.


Sir Terry Died in March of 2015 aged 66 after suffering the effects of early-onset Alzheimer's disease which he was diagnosed with in 2007. He made a substantial donation to the Alzheimer's research trust now known as ARUK (Alzheimer's research UK), he filmed a documentary about the disease with the BBC and became a Patron for ARUK.


Sir Terry is Missed by all of his fans who loved his works and for the awesome person he that was.
