Hey there Earthlings, Alternatives and Trollers. Put down that mouse and lend an ear. Welcome to The Bandersnatch blog where we talk weird, wacky and wondrous. I'm The Bandersnatch and I have no idea what I'm doing.

Random blog day boo yah. As you should know Fridays is random blog day were we talk anything and everything and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on Zoochrosis.

WHAT IS ZOOCHRISIS?

Zoochrosis is the showing of abnormal behaviour and physical disease in animals that have been raised and are living within the zoo that have evolved to live within the wild. The abnormal behaviour may include, unusual head bobbing and weaving/swaying of the body, over grooming and self mutilation, Vomiting and regurgitation, Coprophilia and Coprophaga (the eating of and playing with Excrement) and others. Such behaviour has been around for years now and in 1992 Bill Travers MBE a co-founder of Born Free first coined the term Zoochrosis to describe the unusual behaviour in Zoo animals.

Not all animals are built for life in full-time Captivity due in part to having evolved over millions of years for their traits both physiological and behavioural to be adapted to their natural habitats. Life for animals is substantially different from life in the wild. Especially considering those in the wild often have more space, a varied diet a much better climate and less human interactions in the wild. Wild animals in captivity cannot choose their environment despite being in said captivity might be a help (Ie to help increase population numbers, animal protection from hunters etc.) and as such they face challenges evolution hasn't prepared them for hence Zoochrosis.

The Born free Foundation was founded in 1984 by Virginia McKenna DBE, Will Travers OBE and Bill Travers MBE. The foundation works tirelessly to stop the continued exploitation and suffering of wild animals whether living in captivity or in the wild. From their beginnings they've campaigned for a future of coexisting between humans and animals and providing protection for threatened and endangered species for future generations to come.
