Hey there Earthlings, Alternatives and Trollers. Put down that mouse and lend an ear. Welcome to The Bandersnatch blog where we talk weird, wacky and wondrous. I'm The Bandersnatch and I have no idea what I'm doing.

Random blog day boo yah. As you should know Fridays is random blog day were we talk anything and everything and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on St Swithun's Church, East Grinstead.

Situated off the High Street of East Grinstead West Sussex. St Swithun's is part of The Church of England Faith and part of the Diocese of Chichester alongside St Barnabus and St Luke. There has been a church on site since the 11th century and St Swithum who was Bishop of Winchester from 852 to 862 was chosen as Church patron, the Grade 2 listed building remains a visible landmark. In 1772 the church was struck by Lightning and was rebuilt by James Wyatt, reopening in 1789. A national national appeal for funds in 1788 raised £516, A programme of restoration in 1874 inaugurated its present appearance. In 1979 a Trust Fund was set up to provide funding for restoration. Currently St Swithun's is independent of the Parochial Church Council.

From 1871 to 1908, Douglas Yeoman Blakiston was the Vicar. Prior to being ordained he had worked as an artist. Two large oil paintings by him remain in the church as so several organ pipes he painted with portraits of parishioners. His son Herbert Blakiston, went onto become Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford.

Near the entrance to the church, three stones mark the supposed Ashes of Anne Tree, Thomas Dunngate and John Forman who were burned as Martyrs on July 16th 1556, because they wouldn't renounce the Protestant faith. Thanks to Local Folklore and due in part to the method of execution along with the charge of 'Heresy' the three were assumed to have been charged with Witchcraft and referred to as “The Witches”.
