Hey there Earthlings, Alternatives and Trollers. Put down that mouse and lend an ear. Welcome to The Bandersnatch blog where we talk weird, wacky and wondrous. I'm The Bandersnatch and I have no idea what I'm doing.

As you should know Tuesdays is book blog day were we talk about one particular book and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on the folktale/party game Bloody Mary.

Bloody Mary is a Legend of a Ghost, Phantom or Spirit conjured to reveal the future. Mary is said to appear in a mirror when her name is chanted repeatedly. The Bloody Mary apparition could be benevolent or malevolent depending on the historic variations of the legend. Bloody Mary are mostly witnessed in group participation play and thanks to the Horror Genre of today, the current version of Bloody Mary could be considered particularly violent and bloody. The Legend of Bloody Mary has various influences from history, the two most famous/common are Queen Mary the 1st of England, also known as Mary Tudor, and the Hungarian Countess Elizabeth Bathory of Ecsed.

Queen Mary the 1st (18th February 1516-17th November 1558) also known as Mary Tudor and nicknamed Bloody Mary by her Protestant Opponents, was Queen of England and Ireland from July 1553 and Queen of Spain and the Habsburg Dominions as the wife of Kin Philip the 2nd of Spain from January 1556 until her death in 1558. Queen Mary is known for being a staunch Catholic and for her vigorous attempts to reverse the English Reformation, which had begun during the reign of her Father King Henry the 8th, Her attempt to restore confiscated Property back to the church from the reigns of her father and Brother (Kings Henry the 8th and Edward the 6th Respectively), was ultimately thwarted by Parliament. Queen Mary earned the moniker of Bloody Mary during her 5 year reign by having over 280 religious dissenters burned at the stake in the Marian persecutions.

Countess Elizabeth Bathory of Ecsed (In the Hungarian: Bathori Erzsebet, August 7th 1560 – August 21st 1614), was a Hungarian noblewoman and alleged Serial Killer from the powerful house of Bathory, who owned some land in Hungry, which is current day Slovakia. Elizabeth and Four of her servants had accusations put against them to the torture and murder of hundreds of girls between the years of 1590 to 1610. The servants were put on trial whilst Elizabeth ended up imprisoned in the Castle of Csejte (Cachtice) Where she died a few years later in what several call mysterious circumstances. Several historians call Elizabeth's charges a witch hunt, Others like Michael Farin in 1989 state the charges were supported by testimonies from over 300 people. Some recent sources claim the accusations could possibly be a spectacle to destroy the influence of the Bathory family from rivalling neighbours including the Habsburg Empire.
