Hey there Earthlings, Alternatives and Trollers. Put down that mouse and lend an ear. Welcome to The Bandersnatch blog where we talk weird, wacky and wondrous. I'm The Bandersnatch and I have no idea what I'm doing.

Random blog day boo yah. As you should know Fridays is random blog day were we talk anything and everything and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on The Yorkshire Ripper.

Born Peter William Sutcliffe on June 2nd 1946 in Bingley, West Riding of Yorkshire, to parents John William Sutcliffe (1922-2004) and Kathleen Francis Coonan (1919-1978). Whilst Kathleen was both Irish and Roman Catholic, John was a member of the choir of the local Anglican church. Peter was born premature and spent two weeks in hospital. Kathleen was the victim of domestic abuse making it likely she struggled through her pregnancy under emotional stress. Peter and his siblings were raised in the Catholic faith like their mother and for a brief time Peter was an alter boy.

From 1975 to 1980, Sutcliffe murdered thirteen women and attempted to murder seven more, The press gave him the moniker of the Yorkshire Ripper, the names inspiration came from the Victorian serial Killer Jack the Ripper. When he was caught in 1981 by the police in Sheffield, Yorkshire, Sutcliffe's car had false number plates and when Police returned to the scene they found that Sutcliffe had hidden a knife, rope and hammer behind an oil storage tank, a knife was also found in one of the police's toilets after Sutcliffe requested its use. Two of Sutcliffe's murders took place in Manchester and the rest were in West Yorkshire, hence the name. Sutcliffe was trialled and given twenty concurrent life imprisonment sentences, which were changed to a whole life order n 2010. Criminal Psychologist David Holmes characterised Sutcliffe as being an “Extremely callous, sexually sadistic serial killer”.

At the beginning of his sentence in 1981, Sutcliffe was sent to HM Prison Parkhurst but by 1984 he was diagnosed with Paranoid Schizophrenia and sent to Broadmoor hospital. In 2010 Sutcliffe attempted to appeal his sentencing and gain the opportunity for parole, Though the high court decided that Sutcliffe would never be released. In 2015, Sutcliffe was transferred to a regular prison from Broadmoor. At the age of 73, Sutcliffe died on November 13th 2020 at the University Hospital of North Durum due to Diabetes related complications

Despite Forensic evidence, the police in charge of the investigation were diverted from finding and arresting Sutcliffe, due to two letters and a tape sent to Acting Chief Constable George Oldfield of the West Yorkshire Police with a man's voice saying “I'm Jack, I see you're having no luck catching me. I have the greatest respect for you George, but Lord, you're no nearer to catching me now than four years ago when I started” The accent was identified by Linguists as a Wearside accent linked to the Castletown area of Sunderland. The hoaxer was dubbed the “Wearside Ripper” due to the two letters sent to the Daily Mirror in March of 1978, which boasted of his crimes and claimed responsibility for the 1975 death of 26 year old Joan Harrison in Preston.

The Hoaxer case was reopened in 2005 and with the help of the national database the DNA was matched to John Samuel Humble an unemployed alcoholic who had been living long term at the Ford Estate in Sunderland (A few miles from Castletown), with some luck his DNA had been taken following a 2001 arrest due to a drunk and disorderly charge. On October 25th 2005, Humble was charged with an attempt to pervert the course of justice. On March 21st 2006 Humble was convicted and sentenced to an eight year prison sentence, Humble passed away on July 30th 2019 at the age of 63.
