Hey there Earthlings, Alternatives and Trollers. Put down that mouse and lend an ear. Welcome to The Bandersnatch blog where we talk weird, wacky and wondrous. I'm The Bandersnatch and I have no idea what I'm doing.
Random blog day boo yah. As you should know Fridays is random blog day were we talk anything and everything and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on the well-known and well-loved British TV show DOCTOR WHO.
Doctor Who is a British Sci-fi TV show that is often broadcast on TV by the BBC since its creation in 1963. Created by Sydney Newman, C. E Webber and Donald Wilson, Doctor Who depicts the adventures of The Doctor, an extraterrestrial being who's part of a humanoid race called The Time Lords. The Doctor travels the universe, often with a companion using a time travelling spaceship called The TARDIS, which appears as a British Police Box. The Doctor often works to save lives and liberate oppressed peoples by combatting his foes.
The
series first aired in 1963 with William Hartnell as the first doctor
and ran on for 26 series until 1989, The show was picked up again
twice, the first time in 1996 as a BBC TV movie which was a hoped
backdoor pilot to an American based series which was unsuccessful,
However its next attempt was in 2005 with Christopher Eccelston as
the ninth Doctor, which was successful. As of present day (as writing
and posting this blog), there are 14 more series with 6 more
iterations of The
Doctor with Ncuti Gatwa as the current 15th
Doctor (Due in part to David Tennent's reoccurrence in the role as
both the 10th and 14th Doctor Iterations).
There have been fourteen actors who have taken on the role of the
Doctor (In order of appearance): William Hartnell, Patrick Toughton,
Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davidson, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy,
Paul McGann, Christopher Eccleston, David Tennent (first tenure),
Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, Jodie Whittaker, (David Tennent's second
tenure) and current Doctor Ncuti Gatwa. Thanks to the 50th
anniversary Episode “The Day of The Doctor”, well-known British
actor John Hurt can be added to the list as “The War Doctor”.
Doctor Who has spawned several successful spin-offs as part of what the fan -who affectionately call themselves Whovians- and the production calls The Whoniverse, which includes several comic books films, novels, audio drams and TV series Torchwood (2006-2011), The Sarah Jane Adventures (2007-2011), K9 (2009-2010), Class (2016), and Tales of The TARDIS (2023-2024) The War btween the land and sea is an upcoming TV Series. Doctor Who also has been the subject of various parodies and references in Popular culture. As of Today however Doctor Who has aired forty series, encompassing 883 episodes (as of 2024, 97 episodes are currently missing) covering over 311 stories.
I knew of Doctor Who as a child but didn't really watch the first 26 series due in part to being born after its cancellation. However I started watching the 2005 revival -which is often called NuWho- and have loved watching it since, though I don't call myself a Whovian, I am a fan. My favourite Doctors are Christopher Eccelson, David Tennent and Peter Capaldi, though I have met Sylvester McCoy at LFCC (London Film and Comic-Con), and he is an awesome person in general, My favourite Companions are Amy Pond (Karen Gillian) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) and My favourite Episode is from the NuWho run S2 E3 “School Reunion” The plot which sees the race known as the Krillatanes, disguised as the staff of a school and use the brain power of the schools children to solve a puzzle called “A Theory of Everything” which would allow them control of Time and Space. The reason it's my favourite episode is due in part to the return of characters Sarah Jane Smith (and actress Elizabeth Sladen) and K9, which gives homage to the earlier runs of Doctor Who as well as the growth of both Mickey and Rose as The Doctors current companions.
I highly recommend binge watching Doctor Who if and when you have the time, It streams on BBC iplayer.
Doctor Who will be on TV with a Christmas episode in December 2024, the Episode is called
“Joy To The World”.
