Hey there Earthlings, Alternatives and Trollers. Put down that mouse and lend an ear. Welcome to The Bandersnatch blog where we talk weird, wacky and wondrous. I'm The Bandersnatch and I have no idea what I'm doing.
Random blog day boo yah. As you should know Fridays is random blog day were we talk anything and everything and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on The Phillip Experiment.
The Phillip Experiment was a Parapsychology experiment conducted by a parapsychological research society in Toronto, Ontario Canada in 1972, which at the time was led by Mathematical geneticist Dr. A. R. George Owen and overseen by psychologist Dr. Joel Whitton. Originally the experiment was created to determine whether subjects could communicate through fictional ghosts through the expectations of the human will. The group brought together to be the test subjects for this experiment consisted of Drs' Owens and Whitton as well as Iris Owens the wife of Dr Owens, Margaret Sparrow the former chairperson for MENSA (High-IQ Society) in Canada. Andy H an industrial designer and his wife Lorne, a heating engineer named Al Peacock, accountant Bernice M and Dorothy O'Donnel and Sidney K a bookkeeper and sociology student respectively.
The goals of the experiment was to create a fictional character with a backstory through a purposeful methodology and then “attempt” to communicate with it through the use of a séance -a paranormal communication device used to contact the dead-, The Character created was an English man from the 1600's called “Phillip Aylesford” whose life coincided with several True moments in history (with Multiple contradictions and errors), fought in the English Civil war and had become good friends with King Charles the second, due in part to working for him as a spy. His “death” was due to committing suicide in 1654 after his lover a Romani girl – taken up due to his unhappy marriage to a woman named Dorothea- was burned at the stake after accused of witchcraft.
The experiment has been criticized for its obvious lack of solid controls and its subsequent ambiguous results, due in essence to the unreliability of Seances in general. Subsequent repeated tests with similarly created fictional characters called “Lilith” and “Humphrey”, yielded very similar results under very similar circumstances, ultimately they too were deemed inconclusive.
The supernatural horror films The Apparition released in 2012 and the Quiet Ones released in 2014 were loosely inspired by The Phillip experiment.
