Random blog day boo yah. As you should know Fridays is random blog day were we talk anything and everything and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on Strigoi.

In Romanian mythology, Strigoi are troubled spirits who've supposedly risen from the grave. The have been attributed with abilities such as transforming into a beast, becoming invisible and gaining vitality from the blood of their victims. The Strigoi could be tied to Bram Stokers Dracula, which can be a modern interpretation of The Strigoi thanks to their links with vampires and vampirism.

Strigoi is a Romanian word that originated from a root word related to the Latin terms Strix or Striga, with the additional masculine suffix -oi and the feminine -oaica being argumentative terms. Its also related tot he Romanian verb a striga, which means “To Scream”, In the late Roman Period the word would become associated with witches or an ill-omened nocturnal creature that flies. A Strix refers to the nighttime entity that craves human flesh and blood........particularly infants.

One of the earliest mentions of a Strigoi in Historical material is the story of Jure Grando Alilovic (1579-1656) from the region of Istria. The villager is believed to have been the first real person described as a vampire, because he was referred to as a Strigoi, Strigon or Strigun in local contemporary records. For sixteen years after his death Grando supposedly terrorised his village. Eventually he was decapitated by the local priest and fellow villagers.

A 2009 film called Strigoi, directed by Faye Jackson and starring Constantin Barbulescu, Camelia Maxim and Rudi Rosenfield is based on the Romanian mythology of the Strigoi.
