Hey there Earthlings, Alternatives and Trollers. Put down that mouse and lend an ear. Welcome to The Bandersnatch blog where we talk weird, wacky and wondrous. I'm The Bandersnatch and I have no idea what I'm doing.
Random blog day boo yah. As you should know Fridays is random blog day were we talk anything and everything and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on The Stonewall Riots.
The Stonewall Riots also known as the Stonewall Uprising, Stonewall Rebellion or simply Stonewall, were a series of spontaneous riots and demonstrations in response to a Police Raid that happened in the early hours of the morning of June 28th 1969 at The Stonewall Inn, which is situated in the Greenwich Village neighbourhood of Lower Manhattan in NYC. The demonstrations were not the first time that American LGBTQ+ people fought back at Government-sponsored persecution of Sexual minorities, The Stonewall Riots were the marked beginning for the gay rights movement in the United States and ultimately around the world.
During the 1950's and '60's, Gays and Lesbians in America faced an anti-homosexual legal system more serious than those of either western or eastern bloc countries. Early homophile groups in the US did sought out ways to prove that Gay people could be assimilated into society. Many favoured non-confrontational education for homosexuals and heterosexuals alike. However during the later years of the 1960's time was testing, especially since social movements were highly active, including the African American Civil Rights movement, the counterculture of the 1960's and the anti-war demonstrations. These influences combined with Greenwich Villages liberal environment served as catalysts for the Stonewall riots.
Not many establishments welcomed openly gay people during the 50's and 60's, the ones that did were usually Bars. Though the owners and managers were rarely gay. The Stonewall Inn was owned by the Mafia, and catered to a varied assortment of Patrons and was popular among the poorest and most marginalized people in the gay community; Drag Queens, Representatives of the newly self aware transgender community as well as effeminate young men, hustlers and homeless youth. Stonewall was amongst many routine raids performed by the Police during the 60's, However the officers rather quickly lost control of the situation which attracted a crowd and resulted in the now infamous riot. Tensions between the LGBTQ+ community and the NYC Police, erupted into more riots the next evening and again several nights later. Within Weeks of Stonewall, Village residents were quick to get organized into activist groups with the event to concentrate their efforts on establishing places for Gays and Lesbians to be open about their sexual orientation without fear of being arrested for it.
Following The Stonewall Riots, NYC's Sexual minorities faced gender, class and generational obstacles to become a cohesive community. Over the following weeks and months, Politically active social organizations were initiated and publications were launched that spoke openly about rights for Gay and Trans people. The first anniversary of the riots were marked by various peaceful demonstrations across many American Cities which have evolved into the modern day Pride Parades. The Stonewall National Monument was established at the site in 2016. At the posting of this Blog Pride events are held annually across the world towards the end of June to both mark and honour The Stonewall Riots.
