Random blog day boo yah. As you should know Fridays is random blog day were we talk anything and everything and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on the Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Great Ormond Street Hospital (commonly and informally known as GOSH), is a Childrens Hospital situated in London, first started out as The Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street and was founded on February 14th 1852, after a long fought for campaign by Dr Charles West and was the first hospital in England to provide in-patient beds specifically for children, and despite only opening with just ten beds, the hospital grew to become one of the worlds leading childrens hospitals and amongst the best. Thanks to the patreonage of Queen Victoria and counting various fundraisers including Charles Dickens who was a personal friend to Dr West. Thanks to one of the first fundraisers, The Nurses' Leauge was formed in February 1937.
GOSH was nationalised in 1948, joining the newly formed NHS. During the early years of the NHS the hospital was heavily restricted when it came to private fundraising however the hospital was permitted the continual recievement of pre-existing legacies. One such Legacy is owning the copyright to Peter Pan which createor J. M. Barrie donated to the hospital in 1929.
The hospital is the largest centre for Child heart surgery in Britain and one of the largest for heart transplantation in the world. BY 1962 the first lung and heart bypass machine for children had been developed by the hospital. With Roald Dahl, the well known childrens book author, improvements were made for the Shunt valve for children with hydrocephalus, and non-invasive heart valve replacements. GOSH was also the site of the first clinical trials in the UK for the Rhubella Vaccine, the first fish bone marrow transplant and Gene Therapy for severe combined immunodeficiency.
