Random blog day boo yah. As you should know Fridays is random blog day were we talk anything and everything and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on The Bell Witch.
The Bell Witch also known as the Bell Witch Haunting is part of the folklore from the southern United States. The legend is based on a situation The Bell family -based in North-West Robertson County, Tennessee- suffered during the 19th century.
The Bell family, led by farmer John Bell Sr, lived along the Red River close to the town of Addams. And According to the legend, during the years between 1817 to 1821, the family -specifically John Sr- and the surrounding area came under an attack from an invisible entity, supposedly a poltergeist with the ability to speak, effect the physical environment and shape shift. Some of the accounts record the spirit having possible clairvoyance and the capability of crossing long distances with superhuman speed...or being in more than one place at at time.
Newspaper editor Martin V. Ingram published a book in 1894 titled Authenticated History of The Bell Witch. The book is widely considered the first full-length record of the legend and the primary source for the subsequent story treatments. The recorded individuals in the works were fully known historical personalities. In modern day, however, several people are skeptical of Ingram's work. Often wondering if the book could be historical fiction or just full on fraud. Others usually researchers consider Ingram's work as a nascent (meaning of a process or organisation) folklore study and an accurate reflection of the belief in the region during the 19th century.
In the 20th century, The Bell Witch Cave has become a source of continued interest, belief and generational lore, despite not being recorded as part of the original recorded legend. Contemporary artistic interpretations including film and music has spread the legend across the world. Three such movies were 2005's An American Haunting with actors Donald Sunderland, Rachel Hurd-Wood, Sissy Spacek and James D'arcy as part of the cast, 2007's Bell Witch: The Movie with Betsy Palmer, Cody Newton and John David Hart as part of the cast the movie was delayed a few years due to technical developments and 2013's The Bell Witch Haunting which used the found footage genre and had Andrew Hellenthal, Ted Jones and Cat Attery as part of the cast.
Ghost Adventures the paranormal TV show had an episode at the Bell Witch's Cave showing their investigation there, whilst Youtubers Sam and Colby and Elton Castee with the Overnight Channel have made and posted videos showcasing their own investigations.
