The Hans Christian Anderson Awards are two literary awards presented every two years by IBBY (the International Board of Books for Young People) to an Author and an Illustrator who have been judged to have made a lasting contribution to Literature for children and young people due to the outstanding value of their bodies of work. Each Author and Illustators complete works are often considered during the selection progress. The Awards are explicitly designed to focus on international work, Their not given to a certain country each time. The first writing award was given in 1956, the first illustration award in 1966. the writing award portion is often considered the Nobel Prize for Children's Literature.
Winners of the Awards are chosen by a jury which is put together by IBBY's Executive Committee, there are Ten Jurors, five of whom focus on the writing award whilst the other five focus on the Illustration award.
