Random blog day boo yah. As you should know Fridays is random blog day were we talk anything and everything and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on the Italian actress Gina Lollobrigida
Luigia “Gina” Lollobrigida was an Italian actress, model, photojournalist and sculpter and was born on July 4th 1927 in Subiaco Lazio, one of four daughters of a furniture maker and his wife, her three sisters were named Giuliana, Maria and Fernanda. When WW2 ended in 1945 the family moved to Rome, where she began modelling, took singing lessons and participated in various beauty pagents placing third in Miss Italy contest in 1947.
Lollobrigida's first play was the Comedy Na Santarella by Eduardo Scarpetta, which was showcased at the Teatro della Concordia of Monte Castello di Vibio, the smallest theatre all'italiana in the world. In 1946 she began appearing in various Italian films in minor roles leading to being signed to a preliminary seven year contract by Howard Hughes in 1950. Lollobrigida not wanting to be locked into the contract that kept her in the Hollywood Cinema scene refused to fully sign and filmed many American funded films across Europe. Hughes suspended her and kept her contract despite selling RKO Pictures in 1955. Their dispute kept Lollobridiga in Europe until 1959, with Hughes threatening legal action against the producers regularly.
Lollobrigidia continued working in films through the 50's and 60's of which she was considered an international sex symbol and was dubbed “the most beautiful woman in the world”. As her Film career faded, Lollobrigidia made a move into photojournalism and in the 1970's managed to gain access to Fidel Castro for an exclusive interview.
Lollobrigidia continued throughout her life to be an active supporter of Italian and Italian-American causes. Im particular the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF). In 2008 she received the NIAF Lifetime Achievement Award at the Foundation's Anniversary Gala. In 2013, she sold her jewellery collection and donated the near $5 million dollars from the sale to benefit stem-cell therapy research. She also won the Henrietta Award at the 18th Golden Globe Awards in 1960.
Lollobrigidia passed away at the age of 95 on January 16th 2023 in Rome, Italy. She's buried in her home town of Subiaco.
