Warhammer 40,000 is a British miniature wargame produced by Games Workshop. It is the most popular miniature wargame in the world and is particularly popular in the UK. The first edition of the rulebook was published in September 1987 with the current edition, the tenth being released in June of 2023.
Similar to other miniature wargames, Players enact battles using miniature models of warriors and fighting vehicles. The playing area is often a tabletop model of a battlefield, comprising of building models and various terrain setups. Each player takes turns moving their models around the battlefield and fighting their opponent's warriors. These fights are resolved using dice and simple arithmetic
Warhammer 40.000 is set in the distant future where a stagnant human civilisation is beset by hostile aliens and supernatural creatures. The fictional setting of the game has been expanded by the development of a large body of novels published by Black Library -The Publishing division of Games Workshop- Warhammer 40.000 was initially conceived as a Sci-fi counterpart to Warhammer Fantasy a medieval fantasy wargame also produced by Games Workshop. Whilst they share themes and characters. The settings are independent from each other.
Warhammer 40.00 has spawned various spin-offs with Games Workshop's producing a number go other tabletop and board games connected to the brand such as Space Hulk, Necromunda, Kill Team, Battle fleet Gothic, Adeptus Titanicus and Warhammer Epic. There have been video game spin-offs too such as Dawn of War and Warhammer 40,000: Rouge Trader.
