Random blog day boo yah. As you should know Fridays is random blog day were we talk anything and everything and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on Semana Santa.
Semana Santa is Spanish for Holy Week, The celebration of Holy Week happens in Spain and other Spanish speaking countries the final week of Lent leading to Easter. It has become an annual tribute of the passion of Jesus Christ, that's celebrated by catholic religious brotherhoods also known as Spanish cofradias and confraternities that walk through the streets of various Spanish speaking towns and cities. It's believed such groups had their beginnings in the middle ages but a number of them had their beginnings in the Baroque period -inspired by the counter-reformation- and into the 20th and 21st centuries.
There are some differences in the processions depending on the Region; The more glamorous celebrations often come out of Andalucia, especially Jerez de la Frontera, Granada, Malaga and Sevilla, whilst more sombre and solemn processions happens in Castilla y Leon: specifically in Zamora, Leon and Valladolid.
In 2026, Semana Santa happened March 20th to April 5th.
