Random blog day boo yah. As you should know Fridays is random blog day were we talk anything and everything and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on The Battle of Lewis Road.

The Battle of Lewis Road was a confrontation that took place in Brighton during the 1926 general strike in the UK.

The confrontation occurred thanks to increasing tensions with the policies of the Brighton Corperation and its fears of the members from the Middle Class Union, their concerns were misplaced. The strike began on May 4^th with only 6000 workers, a relatively small proportion of the towns workforce coming out. With most of them being from the transport network, they succeeded in stopping service for both the external rail link and the internal tramway.

By May 8^th, a group of strikers marched to the town hall in response to the councils consideration of Volunteer labour on the trams but were turned away by police with support from “Special Constables” -in reality farmers, sportsmen, hunters and retired cavalry officers- at the entrance.

On May 11^th a group of volunteers including some students attempted to remove trams from the tram depot on Lewis Road (Hence the name). The volunteers were blocked by both the strikers and their families as well as some local residents who'd become curious. Charles Griffin -the Chief Constable at the time was ignored when he ordered the crowd to disperse. Which resulted in the man giving a second order to the officers to advance on foot backed up by the special constables on horseback.

This order resulted in fighting to break out as the crowd was driven back towards Hollingdean Road. This fight resulted in many being hurt with two being seriously injured and seventeen strikers being arrested. A second disturbance happened later that night outside the Brighton and District Labour club on London Road of which another five people were arrested. All 22 arrestees spent an average of three months in prison.

The Trades Union Congress called off the general strike the next day. And some of the transport workers who'd joined the strike were terminated from their jobs by their employers and a celebratory dinner was held for the special constables.

Whilst the local authority saw the Battle of Lewis Road having served the distinction of crushing revolutionary politics in Brighton whilst the working-class activists celebrated it as a day or Martyrdom and heroism. And whilst there was little complaint about the regular police force, there was some complaint about the politically-motivated (Allegedly) special constables/
