Random blog day boo yah. As you should know Fridays is random blog day were we talk anything and everything and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on The Red Army Faction also Known as the Baader-Meinhof Group.

The Red Army Faction also known as the RAF and the Baader-Meinhof Group/Baader-Meinhof Gang was a far left militant group founded in west Germany in 1970 and remained active until April 20^th 1998. Though the group would describe itself as a communist and anti-imperialist urban gorilla group which often engaged in armed resistance against what was considered a fascist state. Members of the RAF generally used Marxist-Leninist term “Faction” whenever they wrote in English. Early Leadership of the RAF included Andreas Baader, Ulrike Meinhof and Horst Mahler.

The RAF engaged in a series of bombings, assassinations, kidnappings, bank robberies and shoot-outs with police over the course of three decades, causing the RAF has been held responsible for 34 deaths including industrialist and former Nazi SS oficer Hanns Martin Schleyer, Jurgen Ponto the head of the Dresdner Bank, federal prosecutor Siegfired Buback and several Policemen and American Servicemen stationed in Germany, many of these attacks included many cases of collateral damage such as chauffeurs and bodyguards. This earned the designation of being a terrorist organisation by the West German Government.

The RAF's activities peaked during 1977 which lead to the national crisis known as the “German Autumn”, which did contribute to the RAF becoming better known though they did conduct fewer attacks than the Revolutionary cells who are held responsible for 296 attacks between 1973 and 1995. The RAFs motivations came from a combination of Leftist political concerns and the perceived failure of the previous Generation's dealings with confronting Germanys Nazi past. In later years various ex-members would go onto receive support from Stasi and other Eastern Bloc security services.

The RAF is considered to have three generations the “First Generation” included the original leaders Baader, Meinhof and Mahler, the “Second Generation” was considered those of the RAF when the leaders were originally arrested in 1972 and the “Third Generation” who were around in the 80's and 90's after the “First Generation” died in the Stammhein Maximum Security prison during 1977.

The group announced its dissolvement on April 20^th 1998 with an eight-page typewritten letter in German was delivered to the Reuters news agency via fax, it was signed RAF with the submachine-gun red star on it. Though in 1999 a robbery in Duisburg with evidence pointing to ex RAF members Ernst-Volker Staub and Daniela Klette was found triggering an official investigation into a re-founding/
