Hey there Earthlings, Alternatives and Trollers. Put down that mouse and lend an ear. Welcome to The Bandersnatch blog where we talk weird, wacky and wondrous. I'm The Bandersnatch and I have no idea what I'm doing.
As you should know Tuesdays is book blog day were we talk about one particular book and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on the Greek Legend: Lycaon; King of Arcadia.
In Greek Mythology, Lycaon, King of Arcadia received Zeus as a guest and having decided to test if Zeus could taste between animal meat and Human meat, served his son Nyctimus as a meal. Zeus being absolutely disguised transformed Lycaon into a wolf, whilst restoring Nyctimus to life.
Though he was notorious for his horrific deed, Lycaon was also remebered as a culture hero. Its believed Lycaon founded Lycosura, established a cult of Zeus Lyceaus and to have started the tradition of the Lycaean Games.
There are several versions of the Lycaon myth as told by various authors. The most popular version is the one written by Ovid in his first book Metamorphoses.
One version of the story has Lycaon sire 50 sons with various wives a;; of whom are nefarious and care free and Zeus visits them dressed as a peasent as a test. They mix the entrails of a child into the gods meal. Zeus gets enraged and overturns the table, Lycaon and his sons are killed by Zeus using lightning, Letting Nyctimus go due to the intervention of Gaia. In another version It wasnt Lycaon who gave the order but his sons.
Other versions of the story have the child not be Nyctimus but a grandchild of Lycaon or a random child. With some versions of the story state the people of Arcadia mixing the childs flesh into the sacrificial mean rather than Lycaon due to hearing Zeus has visited Lycaon. One version has the son of Maenalus -one of Lycaons sons- as the child whilst another has Arcas son of Jupiter and Lycaon's daughter Callisto be the sacrifice. Arcas would go onto become a hunter and his mother a bear of whom he hunts (This would become the myth of the Arctophylax and Ursa Major).
Another version ends up with Lycaon and his sons being turned into wolves and set upon the people of Arcadia like warewolves.
In Folklore a Warewolf or Lycanthrope (from the Ancient Greek for Wolf-Human) is an individual who can shape shift into a wolf-human like creature either voluntarily or involuntarily due to a curse or other affliction. In modern fiction especially films transformations are triggered by the full moon, having been bitten or scratched from another werewolf. Early sources for the belief the ability/affliction in Lycanthropy comes from (Petronius (27-66) and Gervase of Tilbury (1150-1228)
