Random blog day boo yah. As you should know Fridays is random blog day were we talk anything and everything and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on the movie Poltergeist.
Poltergeist is an American Supernatural Horror film directed by Tobe Hooper (1943-2017) and is based on a story written by Steven Spielberg. Spielberg wrote the screenplay alongside Michael Grais and Mark Victor. Spielberg also was a producer alongside Frank Marshall. With the cast including JoBeth Williams, Craig T. Nelson and Beatrice Straight (1914-2001). The Films Plot follows a suburban family the Freelings whose home is invaded by malevolent ghosts that abduct their youngest daughter Carol Anne in the process.
Due to Spielberg directing E. T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982) and being unable to direct another film due to contracts, Hooper was chosen due to his work on The Texas Chainsaw massacre (1974) and The Funhouse (1981). The Origins of Poltergeist can be traced back to Night Skies which was conceived by Spielberg as a horror sequel to his 1977 film Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Hooper was less interested in the sci-fi elements and suggested a collaboration on a ghost story instead.
Poltergeist was released by MGM/UA Entertainment on June 4th 1982 earning critical and commercial success becoming the eighth highest grossing film of 1982 in the process. And in the years since its release Poltergeist has been recognised as a Horror Classic and was nominated for three Academy Awards. Poltergeist has two sequels Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986) and Poltergeist III (1988) as well as a 2015 remake, though they've not had the critical success as the original has.
In German Folklore a Poltergeist meaning rumbling ghost or noisy spirit, is a type of Ghost/spirit that is responsible for physical disturbances, such as loud noises and objects being moved or destroyed. Most claims or fictional descriptions of Poltergeists include the capability of pinching, biting, hitting and tripping people. They are also depicted of being capable of levitation of objects such as cutlery and furnature, making noise such as knocking on doors and producing foul odours. Spontaneous fires and electrical issues such as flickering lights are also considered part of a Poltergeists skill set.
