Book blog
day boo yah. As you should know Tuesdays is book blog day were we
talk anything and everything and pretty much run with it. Today's
blog is on The study series (Part of the Chronicles of Ixia) by Maria
V. Snyder.
POISON
STUDY
Published
in October of 2005 by Luna books, Poison Study is the first of the
Study series and the Chronicles of Ixia and follows a twenty year old
woman called Yalena is given a chance to live as the Commanders food
taster after spending a year in the dungeons awaiting execution.
I was
looking for another book by another author (Trudi Canavan if I must
say so) when I stumbled across all three Study books, since I love to
read I took a chance and bought all three books in one go. Over the
course of the story I found the plot whilst interesting is a little
predictable and Yalena seams a little too perfect and gaining skills
at a peculiar rate despite being a murderer. I give this book 8/10
MAGIC
STUDY
Published
in October 2006 by Luna books Magic study is the second book in the
Study series (and in the Chronicles of Ixia) and the story follows
Yalena back to her country of birth of Sitia where she has to learn
to control her magic. Whilst there she is rejoined with her family,
where her brother Leif proclaims her to be drowned in blood (thanks
to his magical sense) and ends up both solving the mystery of a local
serial killer/rapist and finding out she's a Soulfinder (a very
powerful magician).
Since I
was able to buy all three books in one go I went straight from
reading book one to book two and as such I found the continuity to be
pretty spot on. Again the second story follows the first in being
vaguely predicable with a few twists thrown in. though it definitely
adds onto the whole Yalena is this superhero vibe which I don't think
the writer intended it to be this way but that's what I give this
book 6/10
FIRE STUDY
Fire Study
was released as the third and final book in the study series (Third
in the Chronicles of Ixia) in March of 2008 by Mira books and is the
conclusion to Yalena's journey. Yalena must go off to find Cahil and
Ferde the soul stealer, before realising they aren't the only threat
as a clan of blood magic using magicians and a fire warper attempt to
take control of Sitia. Yalena realises her loyalty is being tested
and she may have to choose a side with a possibility of war between
Sitia and Ixia.
This book
is a very good ending to the story and ties up as many loose ends as
possible along with providing a load of questions for the future.
With the Glass series having been published and the Soulfinder series
on its way to being published hopefully those questions will be
answered. Having read it several times like the others I give the
book 7/10.

AUTHOR:
Maria V.
Snyder born on April 15th 1973 is an American fantasy
fiction and science fiction writer best known for her chronicles of
Ixia books. As a child Snyder wanted to be a storm chaser and this
led her to attend Pennsylvania state university and earn a Bachelor
of Science degree in Meteorology. However forecasting wasn't her best
skills and as such spent several years as an environmental
meteorologist at Skelly and Loy Inc. It was rather boring and as such
Snyder took up writing as a means of seeking a creative outlet. The
study series came first (Look above) which were followed by the Glass
series (Storm Glass, Sea Glass and Spy Glass) the Soulfinder series
(Shadow study-2015, Night study-2016 and Dawn Study2017) completes
the Chronicles of Ixia along with three short stories (Assassin
Study-2009, Power Study-2008 and Ice Study 2010).
For a
while Snyder took a break fro the Ixia series and focused on other
books such as the Insider Duology: Inside out (2010) and Outside in
(2011) which drew up on Snyder's experience in environmental
Meteorology. Since Snyder was a mother to two kids (a boy and girl)
and hates it when they get sick/ill and wishes she could heal them
with a touch. This desire so to speak led to the Healer series(Touch
of Power, Scent of Magic and Taste of Darkness) where the main
character heals people with a touch. Snyder wrote another series of
books under the title of Sentinels of the Galaxy the first book
Navigating the Stars was published in December 2018, the second book
Chasing the Shadows will be published this year (2019) in December
and the third book Defending the Galaxy will be published in December
2020.
All of
Maria V. Snyder's books can be bought at any reputable book
store/website chain(IE; Waterstones, W.H.Smiths, Amazon, Etcetera,
Etcetera).
